Ask your doctor about antihistamines. There are some that don't make you drowsy during the day. Also beware of the rebound effect of some nasal sprays.

antihistamines-good .so is sudafed if taken regularly at correct dosage.have you cleand and simplified your environment?how long since you had a new mattress?new pillows?is there an old carpet?an old dog?perhaps you have chronic sinusitis. the best way to find out needs your doctors cooperation, and several courses of high dose antibiotics.it may be worth trying to drain your sinuses the old fashioned way,by holding your head over a bowl ofhot water .your face needs to be horizontal for this to work.it can be spectacular.i once did it accidentally when i was a boy.no steam ,just reading a comic on the floor .what a surprising messthat was.and what a relief.you may need to take sudafed and something like cetirizene on a more or less permanent basis

Check your diet and cut out all dairy and sugar and see if you notice a change. Also, get tested for Candida as candida can cause chronic sinus problems. Try a neti pot to rinse your sinuses daily - with practice and regular use this helps tremendously. You can also try Dr. Neil Med's sinus rinse, found at any Walgreens. This takes some getting used to but helps open the sinus passages.
Also, try acupuncture - it works wonderfully for asthma and upper respiratory problems. Doctor of Oriental Medicine |

I had much of the same problems with allergies, asthma and using every antihistamine and nasal spray available - feels like your breathing through tiny drinking straws?? - stuffy all the time. Go see a specialist - an ear, nose and throat doctor (ent for short). It took me 30 years of suffering and continuing to go back to a general doctor before I made the switch. I ended up having sinus surgery (twice now) - all went well. After the first surgery they removed so much extra tissue I had in my sinuses I felt like I could breathe for the first time AND my severe allergies became very mild, almost nonexistent. It's called chronic sinusitis and you can take antibiotics and steroids but the problem will keep reoccuring. Another thing with the swallowing - have the ent check your tonsils. My sons were 75% obstructive and usually if the tonsils are enlarged, swallowing will be a problem, but the adenoids will also be enlarged (they are above the throat) and maybe causing your stuffiness. Hope you find any of this helpful.

I also have had a daily stuffy nose for over two decades now. My nose stuffs up and/or runs when I drink, eat, go outside or inside, etc. I went to several doctors, & they all gave me every nasal spray in the world, none of which worked. They kind of gave up on me & so I did my own research & found that I probably have a non-allergic condition in which the capillaries in my nasal passages swell up in response to heat/cold/stress or other things (unknown). This is NOT an allergy, so no wonder the allergy meds didn't work!
I learned that there is no cure for this type of thing, although you may want to try (if you haven't already) a prescription nasal spray called Astelin, which treats for irritants as well as allergies. It didn't work for me, but maybe you'll have better luck. The only thing I can do is use over-the-counter nasal sprays, which are addicitve, but what else can I do? Good luck & I hope you find out what you have & how to fix it! |

sinus surgery is not always necessary .everyone is not the same.antibiotics and decongestants, with antihystamines, fixed me up good, after sixty (yes)years of suffering, including(probably unnecessary, certainly ineffective )tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy at age four.what fun that was.i was carried into theatre by a man, (porter?)who draped me over his shoulder!now i am great, breathing properly for the first time in my life, and without the chronic cough that has plagued me,and cost me my teeth-two packs of cough sweets a day all my school and working life.-i am on a low dose maintenance regime now.thats all.wonderful!

I just wanted to say thank you for posting your stuffy nose issue. I have the same problem and I was begining to think I was going crazy. I am constantly feeling like I am breathing out of a small straw (as someone mentioned) and the pressure in my nose makes me constantly aware of it. I can't work out let alone cross the street without breathing through my mouth and turning red. I have tried allergy meds, seen all sorts of doctors (regular, ent, allergy), gotten xrays of my sinuses, etc. I really thought that I was nuts and it was "in my head". Thanks to everyone who posted as well, I think i'm going to go back to my dr. and be a little more aggressive about this as well as try some at home fixes - instead of just thinking that I will have to live the rest of my life feeling like I am lead around by my nose.

I have stuffy nose for more than 3 years now..strange is one side of my nose cured as for allergy there is no cure which i heard? i can breath through my right nostril for an year , no problem, but my left nostril is stuffy everyday it gets worse 2-3 times in a week Worse means my left ear, left eyes, left side of my throat, left side of chest feel fullness. One of my relative told me i might be have nasal polyps. I went to ent and doctor checked my nose and didn't find polyps. He recommended me to do an allergy test next month i have allergy test. Flonase, Nasacort used to work. Astelin works but not like it is used to be....it is really uncomfortable
