My six year old daughter has an intense need to stretch her hips and shoulders throughout the day. The doctor said it isn't hip dysplasia. I'm worried that she has arthritis.(?) She's had this condition for about 1 1/2 yrs. Does the need to stretch the hips and shoulders sound familiar to anyone? Thanks.

Does she also have hypermobile joints, that is, is she very flexible? If she is, it might be worthwhile to consult a geneticist and ask about Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. it causes joint pain and other symptoms. I have it and for as long as I can remember I've always needed to stretch out and fidget often. But of course she might just enjoy stretching!

I have always been like this but as far as I know I am perfectly normal. It just feels so good and if I don't stretch my hips a lot they feel too stiff for my tastes. I also have a need to stretch my back a lot. I am a 6' female, so maybe it has something to do with the length of my spine supporting me? Not sure, but I check out A OK with MD's at annual exams and with a chiropractor I went to for back pain. I am 32 so I've been like this for a while!

Not many medics know about Ehlers Danlos syndrome and will diagnose a child with aching joints with "Growing pains” Once the child has stopped growing and is still having pain they claim it is hypochondria. It took over 15 years to find a rheumatolgoist who knew about EDS to diagnose me though some people are far luckier. It does help if you know in advance what you may be searching for and can ask about these conditions. I have met many an adult who I can tell has a type of EDS and either hasn't a diagnosis at all or has a wrong diagnosis of Arthritis, Fibromyalgia or ME.

My suggestion...don't take her to a chiropractor. It sounds like she's hypermobile, and chiropractors only stretch out the ligaments supporting the joints, causing her to feel an even stronger urge to stretch, crack and pop her joints. If she's not in pain, then have her exercise with you to build up muscle strength in the areas that irritate her. The ligaments may be too lax, so let the muscles hold the joint in place instead. She may just be growing, but her reaction tells you that she is prone to hypermobility. I wish I could tell you something more that would help (besides a heating pad or a hot bath/shower), but I'm still trying to find relief myself.
I've had chronic pain for more than 3 years now. I fell asleep wrong in the car, woke up with a crick in my neck, and have been on a downward spiral since then. I'm only 22 and appear to be in good health otherwise. I've seen 3 orthopaedic doctors, 2 chiropractors, 3 physical therapists, 1 neurologist, 1 pain specialist, and 2 internal medicine doctors. I've had x-rays and an MRI. I've tried ultram, vicodin, excedrin, tylenol, muscle relaxer, and herbs/vitamins. I am allergic to advil, so I can't try that. I have been tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and rotator cuff injury...all negative. All of the doctors agree that I am EXCEPTIONALLY hypermobile. Besides that though, they throw up their hands and say they have no idea what's wrong with me. My shoulders, shoulder blades, upper back, and neck joints constantly grind and slip out of place. I can crack them back, but they will slip again 5 seconds later. I have an undeniable compulsion 24/7 to twist and stretch and wiggle myself back into alignment. I got worse after seeing the chiropractors. I think, since I'm so hypermobile and have such lax joints, that made the joint even LESS stable. It's like my ligaments/tendons are too loose to hold my joints together. I feel like I'm literally falling apart... I'm in constant pain, stabbing, burning, grinding. Sometimes it feels like someone stuck a knife in between my joints and won't take it out. At this very moment, I feel like I want to rip my head off and set it back on the way it’s supposed to be! I'm worse when I'm sitting for long periods of time (though nothing makes it better except lying on a heating pad, and even then it only subsides, not disappears). On the pain scale (0-10 with 10 being the worst), I'm never below a 6 and can hit a 9 on an exceptionally bad day. I have yet to meet anyone else with these symptoms. I'm tired of trying to motivate my doctors to FIX ME! Not to mention, I don't know where else to go! I’m researching EDS, but I don’t feel like that is what I have (according to the list of symptoms). I’m still going to go to a geneticist to check out the possibility though. Is there anyone out there experiencing the same symptoms as me?

I DO!!! your not alone i promise. I'm 18 years old, with loose joints EVERYWHERE. I've been a power tumbler since i was 4, and a cheerleader for 5 years. I couldnt understand why everytime i got hurt, i stayed hurt. I've had two knee surguries and one ankle surgery. for two years, everytime i take a breath, my back pops up and down my upper spine. My doctor said he's never heard anything like that when he listened it through a stethoscope on my back. At least three times a week, sometimes more, my knee dislocates completely, and I have to just pop it back in. If it doesn't dislocate, it shifts enough to almost dislocate before I catch it. Very frustrating. I found out I have ehlers danlos syndrome, and I definately think you do too. It also has done other odd things to me, like I have 3 fist size bruises on my left thigh and lower legs that I've had for over 8 months. Apparently you bruise easily with eds too. There is really nothing you can do about it. Every joint on my body grinds or cracks all the time..(neck, fingers, wrists, elbws, knees, back..) you name it, it cracks. The constant compulsion to pop it all is annoying. But all that we can "do" is try to strengthen our muscles to take over for what our tendons aren't doing (holding us together) but it doesn't help me much. Everything still feels the same. But best of luck to you! go check and see if you have it!!! |
