Actually canker sores are not contagious--they, like cold sores, are often hereditary, but unlike cold sores they are NOT contagious. They are also NOT a form of herpes. Check out this page from the mayo clinic (one of thebest in the u.s):

True canker sores, inside the mouth, are not contagious. Cold sores, on the dry part of the lip are caused by the herpes virus and are contagoius. Sometimes, but not often, people get herpes virus ulcers inside their mouths and they are confused with true canker sores (aphthous ulcers).

If you get canker sores at least once and month and are willing to report your results by e-mail once a week, you can get a free supply of a new product now in testing for prevention of canker sores. Go to orahealth.com and look at the bottom of the page.
