Default bone infection

Hi,
Trying to find out if there is anyone here on the forum to discuss;Osteomyelitis?
Recently, I had four inches of my collar bone removed due to osteomyelitis,
it's been three months since surgery and things aren't healing so well, my Dr. has refered me to a infectious disease specialist as a recent bone scan came back questionable with suggestions to have several test to figure things out.

Let me hear from you!

pichuu123
Thank-you in advance

i have acctually had osteomyelitis in my right leg right below my knee i got the infection when i was 9 it went on for at least a half a year and my parents took me to 4 diffrent doctors before my pediatrician figured out wat it really was .. all the other doctors told me to jsut take some asprin and that it wasnt anything serious but when we knew wat it was the doctors at the hospital said that if i had found out any later than i had that i would have most likely lost my leg it ws a really scarey experiance but i am glad thats its over they preformed surgery and now uim left with a long scar under my right knee to remind me of it ... i am now 16 but i still remember waking up at 4 in the morning every day for my mom to inject the antibiotics through the pic line in my arm .. thats all i remember right now from the surgery but ya that was my experiance

Hey/wow/ Thanks for your story about this bone infection nasty

Did the drs. take out alot of bone that was infected?

Just got back from a bone scan today...will know more when I go to my drs. appt. on Monday, at this point my left arm and shoulder are in constant pain
guess that means in drs. term "chronic" it's a long healing process and yet to be under a threat that this can return....whenever...sigh.

At any rate I'm still here on planet earth and hope to be for a few more yrs.!

In regards to Ostemyelitis (sp?) it is a very nasty infection. I was diagnosed as having Ostemyelitis in my right lower leg in late 1990. I underwent 2 debreading procedures, during which the surgeon found a broken drill bit which was not stainless steel, which were left open to close from the inside out to eliminate the possibility of the infection being traped in my leg. I was instructed to remove any scabs that formed to assure that the infection was no longer present when my wound closed up. It was open for almost 9 years. It closed sometime in 2000 and behaved very nicely until it flared up again in May of 2006. It manifested as a blood blister on my shin. When I saw my orthopedic surgen (Dr. Heiden) in Madison, WI he referred me to an infectious specialist at the UW University hospital. We are now waiting for another blister to form so that they can shoot dye in the cavity to better locate the source.

Unhappy Re: bone infection

i was diagnosed with osteomyelitis last August in my spine. I dont know where i got it or how. But it was very painful. I have an infectious disease control doctor. I owe him thousands of dollars. I had iv antibiotic treatments for 6 weeks after the diagnosis and then a follow-up treatment of oral antibiotics for 2 weeks. I felt better, but now the same symtoms that occurred at the beginning of the diagnosis are back. The back pain and night sweats, loss of weight. I waited way to long to see a doctor before and when i did go. They didnt diagnose the problem. That is when i ended up in the emergency room of a hospital and stayed for several days and they found out I had this. Has anyone had a reoccurance of the disease. I am just wondering, I sure dont want it back. IT was the worse pain I have ever been in during my whole life. JP

My daughter now 13 suffered from this horrible disease in her sinuses. When diagnosed, she was given not a long life span at all, as the disease eats away at the bone, and there is not alot of bone in the sinuses anyways. She has undergone 17 surgeries in the past 3 years, has undergone hyper-baric treatment and iv antibiotics. She is doing well now, and has a good outlook. For those out there that do have this, it is serious and not to be taken lightly.Hers started out with chronic sinus infections, antibiotics never killed the bacteria and it just continued to mutate. Thank-God for the Awesome Dr.s in Denver, as I may not have a daughter if they did not have the knowledge to know what and how to do!!!!

wow!! Your right, thanks to the "good" Drs. for me in Maine I'm not sure where I'd be now if not for them.
Hope your daughter continues to go forward and heal,17 surgeries for a young person to bear is too painful for me to read about...

Best to you and your daughter

I have just been diagnosed with chronic osteomyelitis of the area right below my left knee. The infection started out as a simple suture abscess after surgery and ended up spreading to the bone. That was in April and the incision has never closed. In July I finally had a doctor suspect a bone infection and she treated me for that even though a lot of the signs were not present. I was on IV antibiotics until the end of August, and Clindamycin until a little over a week ago when another doctor deemed it unnecessary. I went back into the hospital last week and the doctors decided to do a bone scan which did show a bone infection. The doctor I am seeing now said it just came back after all of the previous treatment so I have to be on a lot of stronger antibiotics. He also recommended hyperbaric therapy, which I will begin sometime next week. The pain has been unbearable; it hurts to do anything... to sit, stand, walk, lie down.. worse than the pain I was in after the surgeries I have had on both knees combined.

Anyway, I just wanted to jump in and share my story. My doctors make this type of infection seem so uncommon, but reading here it doesn't seem like it really is.

hi
I went into the hospital in late June of 2006 for a simple torn cartilaige
operation when i came out of it i was fine for about a week then my knee
started to fill up with fluids the pain was really unbearable i had the knee drained about seven times with the labs checking for infection everytime
i also at that time had a mri which showed nothing because they said the knee was to swollen at the time since June i went to the operating room
twice the most recent was before Christmas i guess at one point due to the many times i had my knee drained one lab came up with a staff infection
which one doc gave me oral anti biotics after ten days of no improvement
i spended two days in the hospital they cleaned out the knee with saline and
gave me a midline which failed two days after coming home and i went to
another hospital to have a picline put in had iv antibiotics at home for six weeks had another mri with dye and a bone scan with dye and i"m just
starting to take antibiotics again by mouth the findings are a bone infection
under the knee cap called the tibia ? i"m just starting to feel a little bit better but by know means I"m out of the woods yet i am still doing a little
more research to try to get to the bottom of this diease
