Smile loss of cartilage

I injured my knee many years ago, but had nothing done about it for various reasons. I have had problems with it locking in the past during certain movements so just avoided those. It is now locking any time. Had an MRI and arthroscopy. The dr cleaned up as much of the torn meniscus as he could in hopes that this would stop the locking problem. But according to the MRI and confirmed during the surgery, I have an area with no cartilage and just bone on bone with no marrow edema. My question(haven't been back to the dr yet) is it better to wait for the marrow edema before proceeding with a knee replacement or should you get it done before you have more irritation?
I am in my 50's and would like to go back to some of my activities including camping and fishing without having knee pain.
Thanks
