For about 2 weks now, my tongue has had the sensation that I burned it. I don't recall burning it besides usually when you burn your tongue it goes away after a day or so. I have been fighting a sinus/ bronchial infection with antibiotics and over the counter meds- could this be causing my tongue to feel burnt?

Weird, I have the same problem and I am 41. I have had it for at least 2-3 months. The "burned" area is the first inch or so of the tip of my tongue. Sometimes it is pinker there in a perfect semi-circle. Food and wine don't taste as good now, which is the thing that bugs me most.
The doc is treating me for thrush. I hope it works. Please update us here on the forum if you guys figure out what is causing your problem.

Hi I'm 43 and I'm experiencing similar symptoms for close to a month now. Mine also feels like I burnt it but can't think of when I would have done it. My mouth has felt pasty and I my tonque looks like it has little cuts or something on it. Roof of my mouth also bothers me too sometimes. I too have have sinus problems with post nasal drip. I was also starting to think of thrush. How are you treating the thrush.
Thanks!

The doc prescribed Nystatin Oral Suspension. It's a sugary tasting mouthwash that I am supposed to use 4 times/day for 5 days. I'm only on Day1. If it works, I'll post about it.
I was on antibiotics back in October, and the problem started after that. Since antibiotics can trigger yeast infections, it makes sense. The perfectly symmetrical semi-circle that the irritated area makes still seems weird to me, though. It seems like thrush would be more random.

A sore tongue can also be a sign of vitamin B2 deficiency

It could also be a virus.

I have had burnign tongue and gums for 2 years now with NO relief even after 7 kinds of doctors. A rheumetologist diagnosed part of it as Celiac and Sjogren's Syndrone. Neither have a cure or pain reliever. I've tried the mouthwashes but they are for 5 minutes less pain maybe. My teeth have shifted position due to the rubbing I do with my tongue on my teeth, both awake and asleep. But sleep is very little even with Lunesta (2mg) which probably contirbutes to the burning as it is known to cause dry mouth. Anyone have any suiggestions???

Hi, I am 25 yrs old and have the same burnt sensation on my tongue as well. The only thing that scares me is that when i looked in the mirror my tongue seemed to have split deeply in the middle down the centre surronded by white. I was at the doctors last week getting my throat checked as it was very sore and she did not seem to mention it, so I assume that it must have split whilst I was on anti-biotics.
I am very scared! Can anyone give me some insight to what this symptom relates to?

This condition seems to be getting out of control. Can someone declare a pandemic?
I have been having this problem for about 6 months now. When it started I thought that my new dental work on my back teeth had cut my tongue to cause the pain so I went to the Dentist to have them filed. Then it just kept reoccuring week after week. One week pure pain, then the next it was gone. Now I can't eat solids and it hurts to swallow. My mouth has a strong metallic taste, the roof and tongue feel burned and my tongue has sores down both sides, I can stick it out far enough to really see but they look like swollen patches covered with white bumps. I do feel swelling in my mouth and my saliva is foamy/cottony. I wake up at night choking with a dry mouth. I hear a lot of people claiming they were on antibiotics just before this happened, I too was on Zithromax for Staph, I am not sure if the Staph can cause this or it is the Yeast. I do know that it is at times unbearable and I am close to becoming a pain-killer adict. My doctor seems uninterested in treating this, I believe because he knows that it is hard to treat. I can't believe the amount of possible causes for this condition, we have to be able to narrow it down. Here is what I have been doing to try to help live with this.
1. Throat lozenges
2. Tylenol
3. Mouth wash
4. Oral rinse
5. Percocet
If anyone has better ways to control this I would love to hear it. Only good thing about this is that it has helped me quit smoking and now I will lose weight because I can't eat very much.
PS. this is not a vitamin deficiency as I take centrum daily and I have high iron.

Sore tongue and throat and my tongue looks like it has growths at the back of it that don't go away even after it stops hurting. At night a dry sore throat and very little sleep because of the hurting. I don't take Zithromax but it seems to happen during cold and allergy season when I'm on Pseudovent. My doctor is stumped and I have to go through it every year at this time. I just use cough drops and drink plenty of fluids. Right now my tastbuds are shot too. You may want to try an allergist, I know I'm going to this time because I just can't take this anymore and my doctor isn't able to help me and I haven't been able to find anything online. I hope we both are able to find some relief.
Peace

Hi, I ran across this forum via a Google search (gotta love 'em). Anyway I'm experiencing loss of taste and a very strong metallic taste in my mouth.
It started about 3 days ago and at first it was a bump on the left side of my tongue that felt like I had burned it (I hadn't). Yesterday it was a little worse and I also started to notice my taste changing. Today I noticed the tip of my tongue was sore and as of this evening the right side has bumps. Also I now have a STRONG metallic taste in my mouth and almost all of my taste is gone.
I'm a 39 year old male, and I consider myself to be fairly healthy. I eat well and work out 2-3 times a week. I'm not taking any medication and I haven't taken any vitamins in about a month, though I did just take a multi just in case I'm deficient in something.
I rarely get sick but Tuesday night I did have a case of diarrhea but I thought that was from a bad salad from the grocery. Other than that I feel fine but this is starting to worry me. If I can't taste my coffee in the morning I'll be a pain to work with tomorrow! :D
If it doesn't get better tomorrow I'm call the doctor. I'll post any updates.

The swelling went down in my mouth and I could stick my tongue out enough to see inside. I could see a canker at the side/back of my mouth. I went to the doctor and he couldn't see it, although when I left, I checked again and I could see it plainly. At least he took a throat swab so I will know soon enough if it is bacterial or not. The metallic taste is still there it makes food taste aweful. My mouth will be clear by the end of the weekend, now I just need to hope it doesn't hit me again in the next 5 days. At least I lost 10 pounds in the last week. I will post the results if any of the swab.
My pain also always starts at one side of my tongue and moves accross to the other side.

I Am 44, And I Hve Been Having A Slight Sensation On My Tongue, Too. It Feels Like It Was Burned And Has Begun To Heal, So There Isn't Really Any Pain, Per Se, But Food (especially Salty Foods) Taste Funny, As Though The Tip And Down The Sides Of My Tongue Have Been Burned. Strange... It's Been Going On About A Month. If Any One Finds Out What It Is, Please Post Your Findings!

Hello. There are many reasons for the `burning' tongue problem and most have been mentioned here. Approx 10yrs ago I began to experience a burning sensation on one side of my tongue and because I had dealth with thrush in the past due to antibiotics I thought this was the same and treated it accordingly. After several months (foolish of me to wait but it would almost feel as though it was going) I saw my GP. She talked of the `thrush' thing and gave me a different treament which I tried diligently but without success.
After 12 mths of the pain, ulcers on my tonhue and cheeks she sent me to a specialist who diagnosed Lichen Planus. It can hit both men and women but I gather predominatly women. It is an auto-immune disease that they say attacks mainly women over the age of 45yrs. That was me but I have since read many reports that indicate age and gender is not a major factor.
Most of the auto-immune issues arise from stress and/or prolonged ill health - so they say - but every individual has their own story.
LP can only be treated by steroidal mouth-wash (which wisely or unwisely I refused to use). The condition drove me almost mad for about 5 yrs and then went almost as suddenly as it had arrived. I still have a sensitivity on the part of my tongue that was deeply affected and if I allowmyself to become over tired our if I am very stressed about something it will threaten to come back. There is no cure for it, so I work on my diet, my sleep and my liftestyle.
Sadly, just over 2 yrs ago I was diagnosed with Lichen Scelrosis - and so the battle continues but giving in isn't my style so...
Hope this helps someone :o)

Hi - I would like to ask the last poster for more info about Lichen Planus - can you post any references and give us a common name for this? Very sorry to hear of your experience.
I have had the burning mouth sensation and extreme dryness at night since last fall. Srojen test has been done, waiting for results. I have wondered about the loss of taste that others report; I fear this also.
Since I have several auto-immune issues already (asthma, allergies, arthritis) hearing of another one would really take the cake...
Several of the earlier posts do seem to describe look & feel of thrush (yeast) which SHOULD be simple to diagnose and cure by any GP. That fits with timing after taking antibiotics. There are web sites which offer homeopathic remedies for thrush (which even if you take the medical cure may help while you wait for it to clear...)
thanks and good luck to all

Hi, I am having some similar problems, but after reading up about thrush and lichen planus which have been suggested, I'm pretty sure they don't apply to me. My tongue is red with small darker patches on the tip and along the sides. Also, the sides look like they have bites taken out of them! Most recently I'm seeing a slight pink/orangish discoloration! Does anyone know what this could possibly be??

I have been in the medical field and health/nutrition realm for over 20 years and I have just started having this same sensation with my tongue. I have eaten organic food and taken whole food supplements for long time and I'm also stumped about what causes this. I have a mild numb/post burned on the healing side feeling on my tongue. I have no discoloration or fissures or ulcerations. For all intense and purposes my tongue looks normal but doesn't feel normal.
The only thing I can tell that I have done differently is that I just started taking iodine to see how it will affect immunity and energy. So far I cannot complain except for the tongue. I thought originally that is was a B deficiency but I take them as well, however iodine may inhibit the absorbsion of B's or other things that are affecting the tongue - unknown.
Some of you do sound like thrush which acidophilus would greatly help as well as looking into candidiasis. Others of you with fissures forming sounds like classic for B deficiencies. However, I will continue to look for answers. If all of you will try one think at a time and let us know the results that would be excellent.

Hi all this is Troy again-
I tried a food based natural B vitamin and that did the trick for me in about 36 hours. I thought about the scurvy issue and that may be likely as I don't take vitamin C any more since I found out that almost all C supplements are synthetic which is why they are doses in the 1000's. If you get the real vitamin C you only need a 50-100 mg or less! So I don't know for positive that I didn't get more C in my diet and stop it. Anyway hope this helps.

So glad I found this website - searching in desperation for a remedy for my 77 year old husband who is being driven mad by sore tongue and doctors, dentists, anti-smoking counsellors of 30 yrs experience - nobody had ever heard of this and could offer nothing that helps. After a bad bout of bronchitis and antibiotics to clear that condition he decided to stop smoking after 65 years. He used nicotine patches for a couple of days then went cold turkey. He sucked lots of boiled sweets first few days until a sore tongue prompted him to stop the sweets. Has been cigarette free now nearly 10 weeks and coping well but tongue is so bad he's close to breaking point. Thing is, last time he stopped smoking about 5 years ago same thing happened and he did go back smoking and within a few days the tongue got better. He has tried 2 courses of Nystatin drops, Cordysol mouthwash,Teatree oil as mouthwash and relies on plain yogurt to soothe tongue. This sore, stinging dry tongue and swollen lips keeps him awake. Also using denture fixatives while awaiting new dentures - tried several gels in case one was causing an allergy. Tried Ambesol without success. Could this be psychosomatic?

Hi, my mother has been suffering from burning mouth, gums and lips for over ten years. Eight of those years, she was living in Florida with my dad where they spent 2 years going to at least 20 different doctors or dental specialists. No real relief and all the different meds they put her on has burned out her brain. She has been on all the mouthwashes, used herbs and healing supplements and of course all the drugs given to her by clueless doctors and no real relief.
I moved them up th NC and they live up the street from us. In the first year they were here, I took mom from a nutritionalist to a facial pain doctor to acue puncturist to a hypnotist and then to Duke Diagnostic Center for pain. Nobody has helped her. At this point I feel her nerves are damaged and sending pain messages to her mouth 24-7. I keep her on an antidepressant and give her lunesta to sleep as well as the daily cycles of mouthwashes and vitamin B but nothing ever seems to give any real relief. Our dentist has given her 10 shots of lidocaine at A TIME AND AFTER 3 HOURS THE PAIN IS BACK!!! The ripoff facial pain guy charged hundreds for dollars for each visit and did less for my mom than the regular dentist. I think this burning mouth should be called neurapathy of the mouth. I have an aunt and friend whose nerves are burning in their feet and I feel this is what mom has in her mouth. If morphine and codeine don't make a dent in the pain then I think she needs some type of lasar treatment in the mouth to sever some of these burning nerves. I haven't found anyone willing to do this. Even at Duke, They tried numbing her from the neck up and in a few hours the pain was back.
I thought I could help her but in almost 3 yars I have'nt found anyone. A friend of mine watched a show about people in Germany who had nerve pain and wer put into comas for 5 days. Once they wewre brought out of the coma their nerves had returned to normal and their pain was gone. Their areas of pain were in the leg and on the face but I keep wondering if it would help people with mouth pain.
Any thoughts or feedback, I would be glad to hear from you..........

I just went to the ER this morning for the same thing. I noticed my tongue felt "burnt" also. The ER doc told me that when you take an extensive amount of antibiotics they can kill the good bacteria in your mouth. Then there are no good bacteria to kill off infections and such. I was given one pill of Diflucan and a "Majic Mouth wash"...which consists of Ladicaine, benadryl, mylanta, etc. I'm praying this works. My tongue feels horrible!!!

It's been a couple of months now, but no change.
The sweetish liquid the doctor gave me for thrush did nothing. I've tried probiotics, thinking that perhaps antibiotics had killed off the good bacteria. No change. I take good, balanced multivitamins daily and eat a balanced diet, so I don't think it is a vitamin deficiency.
My symptoms are *not* as bad as some that I have read here. It's annoying to me, and reduces the joy I find in food. But it isn't enough to keep me up at night, and is only mindly painful at times.
The burning gets worse when I eat hard cheeses or drink wine, which suggests an intolerance or allergy for sulfites. It doesn't really explain why it never completely goes away, though. Perhaps the cause is something else, and the sulfites just aggravate the symptoms. Sad, because wine and cheese are two of my favorite things in life.

This is almost a month that my mouth tastes funny. All day long I have this dry mouth and it seems that I had ate something that my mouth feels this way. But I haven’t. It just feels like when you eat fruits like persimmon your mouth feels like cottonmouth then eventually it subsides after a while. Mine is like that all day long. It is horrible when I go to sleep. Middle of the night I feel there is no moisture under my tongue on both sides. It wakes me up. I have to swallow my saliva in order to give some moisture to my tongue. Please help me.
Thank you
I found this page about a week ago while following some links on the web, about a totally unrelated topic. Still not sure how I got here. I was in a hurry and only glanced at the messages, but later I thought I should tell you about how I cleared up a similiar problem. Had a helluva time finding this page.
I had a split from side to side in the center of my tongue and red splotches around the rim. There was the sensation of having burnt it with hot food.
Here is what I did...
At most any drugstore or Walmart(shudder) you can buy Acidophilus for 6 or 7 dollars. They are caplets... Crush it up and hold it in your mouth on the front of your tongue and under the tongue. (the longer the better) I noticed a remarkable improvement within 12 hours. Did it twice and the problem went away.
What is it?
Lactobacillus acidophilus ( L. acidophilus ) is the most commonly used probiotic, or "friendly" bacteria. It isn't a drug. Your own body produces this, but sometimes there are areas that don't have the right amount.
Having had this problem, I've done a lot of research on it. No where that I can find does it suggest doing this, but being desperate... I tried it and it worked.
I'm interested to know, if this works for you.

Hi, my sister suffered with the same thing, except she went through 5 doctors (specialists) and 8 months later, she was diagnosed with oral lichen planus. It took a dental pathologist to diagnose her and now she treats it with a topical solution and some other meds. She will always have it, but it is only bad when it flares up. They think she may have been predisposed to lichen planus, but the whitening agents in toothpastes and mouthwashes exacerbate it.

For a lot of us here, look in candidas overgrowth. I have the same problem, it gets worse when i eat sugar. I've had the problem since march now, no doctors can cure it. I've been given antibiotics, nystatin, and magic mouthwash, that all did nothing.
So now I'm going to try a candida cleanse, as I've been getting symptoms that are worse than just oral thrush. Like acid reflux, indigestion, constipation, and weird oral sores on my cheeks.
I've been tested for a lot of things, STDs (I have none), diabetes (nope don't have that either), vitamin deficiency, (nope perfectly balanced vitamins according to tests), I don't have aids, or hepatitus either. What oh what can it be?
I have oral thrush, so it's perfectly well known that this is yeast, which is candidas albicans. After being charged out the ass with doctors I've decided to try for myself, and go ahead and diagnos candidas overgrowth. Do some research on it, all the symptoms point to that.
I am buying candigone and paragone, I take acidophilus pills and garlic. I am also going to decrease as much sugar in my diet as possible. Basically it's a meat, veggie, water diet. Like, nothing with additives. I'll report back if I get any results.

I too have this problem. It moves from my tongue to the roof of my mouth throughout the day. Now it actually feels like it's burning in my throat and my sinus's have been bothering me recently... this is driving me crazy as well...going on for 3 months now... at night it gets worse. I hope for the best though and it's interesting to see that I'm not the only one who suffers with this. Currently treating acid reflux with nexium pills from the doctor which is helping slightly but I'm still not convinced this is totally an acid problem. I wish everyone luck in their medical conditions and hope relief is around the corner.

Over the last two weeks I've also been experiencing weird tongue symptoms - my tongue feels like after you've burnt it - no pain, just that numb and funny feeling when I eat. It's only on the right side of my tongue.
I haven't been to see a doctor yet but given that my tongue is white coated, and that I also often have thrush and a number of other yeast related ailments, I'm guessing it may be related to candida albicans. I am going to try taking Threelac which many people online seem to be raving about (www.candidafree.net)

Hello All,
Well, at long last....after an eternity of looking for someone with the same symptoms i've found you all. Thought i was going nuts with this tongue, was told it was the acid reflux...which i have ...that was causing the sinus to get infected, so been using a neti pot for the last week...no effect on tongue, but i do have nice clear sinus's now lol I also have Crohns so my immune system is pretty low from the drugs i'm on. I just wondered is this going to be constant or is there remission periods?

Hi There,
Update since my tongue, roof of mouth and throat has been burning since I took colloidal silver. It's been almost 4 months now and actually in the last few days relief is in sight. I have been seeing a kiniesiologist who works out of his home who does muscle testing and asks body what the problem is. Of course my symptoms were from the colloidal silver and body was allergic and suffered some damage. But... the good news is that now that I am eating things that my body wants which includes much in season cooked vegetables, no sugars, limited fruit, and lime juice in water... along with folic acid, ginseng, garlic and gelatin and a digestive enzyme... my tongue is improving substantially and the acid reflux has also settled down to just an itching feeling in my esophogus. Now... if this worked for me that's great... but I am not suggesting that these remedies would be the same for you... but I do recommend muscle testing and finding out what it is your body is wanting and lacking. If anyone is interested I could find out the total background of the testing and update this to people interested. The relief is a Godsend and I hope the best for all who suffer with the BMS.

I had the same thing occur during antibiotic treatment with Zithromax for a sinus infection. It was so weird!!! I almost asked my Dr if that was a known side effect, but I looked it up myself and it wasn't in the literature. I agree it seems it could be Candida/Thrush rebound from antibiotics. Also I know you can get sore mouth from lack of Vitamin C (scurvy) and there also is a tie in to B vitamins, also like mentioned in this thread already. Some people don't absorb enough vitamins even if they are getting a normal amount in their diet, so they need to supplement that..

I am 42 years old- after taking Zithromax in March of 2006 for a sinus infection - my tongue felt funny for a few months and in June of 2006 my tongue became white and burning. We thought it was thrush (the cultures were negative tho) but after treating that on/off for a year - I still have a constant burn in my tongue, roof and lip. Zinc supplements seems to help for about a month but then it came back. I was also diagnosed with Sjogrens syndrome.
I am curious how many people got this condition after using antibiotics? I think the antibiotics started the process.
And can anyone comment on if at any point the symptoms just completely went away? A few doctors said it can go away as strangely as it started but I haven't heard of anyone that has happened to.
I feel very frustrated because I feel completely fine except for this burning sensation. If anyone can write back if they have had any success stories or information they can share - that would be helpful. I have tried probitics but it hasn't been that helpful.
thanks

I have had a sore tongue for about 6 months now. I think it started after I took a course of antibiotics called Cefalexin for cystitis but it may have started after a course of lansoprazole that I took for acid reflux at about the same time. I have had a lot of ailments lately!( going through the change!)
I went to my doctor about my tongue, but he said he can see nothing wrong. But it is white and a bit cracked, he said that was normal! Anyway he prescribed an anti thrush lozenge thing which has not worked. It really gets me down. In the morning the tongue is so dry and white. I just want it back as it was.
I think I will try extra vitamin B as someone suggests here.
I will let you know how it goes.

I too have been having the 'burned tongue' (not painful)and dry mouth and loss of taste symptoms. No antibiotic use though. Sinus flareup and steady use of Claritin for allergy, and Protonix for excess acid. These mouth symptoms are really strange feeling,it is comforting to know others know what I'm talking about. Noticed someone mentioned whitening agents exacerbate lichen planus, and I have used the whitening strips to brighten teeth. (?) But never had this side effect before. Wish you all well.

I too like you all have the same symptoms, and have had for about 12 months now. It's driving me mad but reading everyone's posts helps to know that I'm not alone. Anyone who finds out what this is will be revered I'm sure.
I too am sceptical that this may have been drug induced as I have had antibiotics and anti-inflamatory meds last year before this started.
It came on very suddenly, after eating a chinese meal. I mention this because I hadnt had one in a very long time and at first thought I might have a food intolerance to something I ate. I've seen my GP several times, had mouth wash, bloods taken you name it - not B vitamin deficient ie pernicious anaemia or diabetic. It's constantly on my mind all the time, feels burnt sometimes worse than other times. I'm treating myself with Corsadyl now and whilst my tongue looks better it's made no difference really to the burning sensation. Other symptoms I've experienced have been that my tongue has had a whitish coating, pie crust like appearance all the way round it, fissures and very reddened edges and tip. Additionally, I've had a metallic taste in my mouth (my husband said one day that my breath smelt like iodine). I also thought my saliva was becoming more acidic as it was affecting the enamel of my teeth (feeling like it was being worn away). So I started using a new type of toothpaste specially for this called pro-enamel, which helps. Also, I have had acid reflux ...tremendous pain behind sternum which the GP treated sucessfully, however I am now also getting abdominal cramps (infrequently), am very very flatulent and have intermittent sore eyes (as if I have hayfever). We live rurally, so I have even contemplated whether I might be affected by the sprays that the farmer's use on their fields!
I do however have polycystic kidney disease and Polycystic Ovary syndrome.

I have been experiencing much of what the others have posted. Except that I really did burn my tongue. I burnt it on a brown sugar syrup I was cooking and foolishly tasted. However it never healed, (or at least the sensation never went away) and I am experiencing an uncomfortable sensation on the inside of my lower and sometimes upper lip. The sensation on my tongue is also at the tip of my tongue, as others have described. I have been dealing with it for about 6 months. At first it was really unbearable, but is better when I do not eat sugar or drink coffee. I have thought of thrush, because I get mild but recurring yeast infections unless I am on a yeast-starving diet or at least do not drink coffee or eat any sugar. The yeast infections go away as my hormones return to normal after ovulation or menstration and I don't always get them. I read on another site that the burning tongue/acid mouth can be caused by an increased acidity in the body due to toxins produced by fungi. The site recommends using baking soda to reduce acidity, and peroxide/water mouth wash. I have had some relief using these remmedies the past 2 days. We have been remodeling a very old house, so I am sure I have been exposed to molds and the onset of this seems to correspond to when we started rennovations. Aloe vera juice has also helped

Hello all.
I had the same symptoms for 2 weeks. Not as long as most of you, but the symptoms were identical. I'm a 32 year old male smoker. It all started out with numbness and the feeling of something in my throat. When the feeling came back, the tip of my tounge felt like I had burnt it. When the first week went by I got concerned. I went to the store and bought some Hydrogen Peroxide and some Listerine. I alternated the rinsing. No particular order, just rinsed with one, then later the other up to 4 times a day. At first, both burned really bad. But after about the third day, the symptoms started to clear up. I then noticed that in the spots left that hurt there were very small white spots. But after one week of the treatment, it all cleared up. I'm not sure if my problems was bactierial or not (altought I doubt it because I did do anything to expose my mouth to bacteria out of the normal), but this worked for me. Hope this helps!

T-Rex, did you find out what you had, and is it cured? I too became frustrated when both wine and cheese start to burn, and I love them both too. Now we know there are people out there with the same symptoms, I wish more people would post what they did to cure it.

My symptoms began while I was taking a corticosteroid medication. Began as thrush and progressed to what I believe is geographic tongue (benign migratory glossitis). This has been ongoing for about three years and is a real pain in the tonque. Doctor prescribed antifungal type drugs and none of them solved the problem.
Seems to worsen with alcohol consumption, spicy foods, and stress. Like another of the posters, I've had some success with Acidophilus. I buy the expensive variety from the health food store that they keep in the refrigerator. 2 billion live cultures. These are capsules that I pull apart and sprinkle the powder directly on the tongue. It doesn't taste bad and seems to help. There's another added benefit as well. After taking it this way for a while, I never get heartburn any longer.
I've come to terms with the fact that I may be able to control the symptoms at times, but I'll never cure the freakin' thing. Maybe for Halloween, I'll stand at the door with my tongue out to scare the living hell out of kids that come trick or treating to my house.

My son has been diagnosed with Geographic tongue, and his symptoms are similar. (He is only 5.) He had been on quite a few antibiotics last year when he had strep throat numerous times. Since he hasn't been on the antibiotics much since he got his tonsils out, he hasn't had too many flare-ups. He never wants his food to be more than room temp. (I used to tell him it wasn't hot, now I know it probably feels like his tongue is burning.) He has also been on allergy medicine for the past year, and that seemed to help too. He still gets it a little, but not his entier tongue, like it used to be. You may want to research "geographic tongue" and see what you find.

I'm 47 yo healthy male, on no medications.
About a month ago I noticed my tongue starting to "crack" with fissures on the sides and down the middle. Then after a week or so my tongue became sensitive like I'd burnt it with a hot drink - which I hadn't. Then the insides of my cheeks swelled up and feel all lumpy to touch and are sensitive - I won't say overly, but they're irritated and painful. The sides of my tongue feels similar.
I saw a doctor and she prescribed oral nysatasin which seemed to help, but then all the symptoms came back. She also tested my white cell count and that came back fine.
After thinking I'd largely gotten over it, it flared up again, to the point where my mouth felt like I'd been to the dentist and had an injection. This morning my tongue was totally white.
Symptoms. "Burnt feeling on tongue", swollen sides of tongue, swollen insides of cheeks (primarily on left) and around corner of left side of my mouth.
Any advise or suggestion would be appreciated.

I find that Geographic Tongue is made worse by eating anything that has Canola Oil as an ingredient. I avoid it whenever possible, but on occassion it sneaks in. I usually brush my teeth and tongue immediately and that helps somewhat. But what I find helps the most is Pepermint Lifesavers. If I eat one right away, it cools off my tongue and the pain doesn't come back.
Also, for those of you prone to thrush which is a yeast infection of the mouth, try eating Dannon Activia once a day. It helps balance the bacteria vs. yeast in your whole body, mouth included. Plus if you're prone to intestinal problems, it helps too.
good luck and don't forget - Peppermint Lifesavers - who would of thought!

I was pretty desperate for answers and tried Acidophilus. Looks like I am the 3rd person on this thread to find relief in it.
Seriously guys, it's just a few dollars out of your pocket. So try this before you give your life savings to the doctors. It worked for Trey in 24 hours (see earlier posting), and it worked for me in just a couple of days. Spend the money and if it doesn't help, it's only a few extra dollars, THEN you can go to the doctors.
Good luck guys!

I am glad that I got into this discussion. I have the same feeling for the last twoday. However mine started with a throat infection and my daughter also had both (throat infection and feeling of burnt tongue). My daughter is only 9 years old and she recovered from it within days.

Hi! Just came across this page....I wouldn't have believed so many have suffered from this! Mine started over 2 months ago. 1st symptom was that it looked like my taste buds were swollen. Then my tongue felt like I'd burned it (I hadn't). Then I noticed fissures along the sides. At first I used popsicles to make it hurt less, but soon ran out of those, and started rinsing w/ hydrogen peroxide. It burned like crap while it was in my mouth, but gave a little relief afterwards. then my mouth got white/yellowish on my gums (the bony ridges from when you pull out your lip) (the vestibule) on both top & bottom. Got so bad I went to the dentist (who, since he had no idea what was going on, sent me to an oral surgeon) who said it looked like I had a chemical burn (which was true--the discolored areas began to slough off). Told me to stop the peroxide, gave me a Rx for chlorexidine gluconate and some viscous lidocaine. I also have the bad taste, everything tastes bad, metallic. Also teeth look like they are eroding (my two front bottom teeth, look like they are "hollowing"--the tops). The base of my tongue looks swollen, and the veins are very purple (not quite like the pictures of varicose veins that I've seen when researching, but close)
Before this happened, I was taking steroids. Also had been told I had geographic tongue (was painless, just funny looking). I also use the professional strength Crest whitening strips (never gave me a problem before, other than making teeth sensitive for a day, but now aggravate the symptoms). Took the DepoProvera shot in August, which has caused me a LOT of other side effects, but haven't seen this mentioned as being a side effect of it when looking online. Also, smoke every once in a while, which causes it to flare up more.
am going to try the acidophilus and maybe vit B and C. I know that the depo leaches calcium and supposed to be taking that & Vit D........if anyone has anything that has worked for them, could please send info to grapeshotz101 at that reallly warm spot? :) :p
Thanks!

Hi all,
I too have had the problem for 2 years. I'm convinced that it's never going away. I have tried many remedies with no avail and been to 12 doctors who have offerred very little explanation. The ent dr. wanted me to eat plain yogurt 2x per day, but he said for sure that it isn't thrush. Whatever it is, my tongue appears "beat up";it isn't as smooth as the normal tongue. I am very self conscious about it. However, the doctors claim that they don't see the roughness around the edges of my tongue. The little lines come and go. Whatever it is it causes my entire mouth to feel strange at times and my teeth have never been cleaner because I brush all day.
Good luck everyone & glad I found the forum.

I had the same thing my tongue felt like I had burned it my mouth felt pasty and I had slits in my tongue and a raw looking area in the middle. I saw on one website someone had used a combination of things and it had cured it. I tried the same things and after three weeks it has gone completely.
I took Acidophilus Plus, Natures Aid B6 and Spartone which is a iron suppliment I got all three at my local health food shop.I hope this helps some of you.

I just started feeling thins about a week ago, then I started accidentally biting my tounge. My tongue on the left side feels like it was burnt and my mouth is so dry and my lips feel like their on that verge of getting numb after the dentist inject that novacane. I take a multi every day. I recall having a sore throat last week, which went away and now this. I don't know what to make of it. I started drinking lots of water to ease the dry mouth. I will google all the recommendations noted previously and maybe got to the store and geta B complex and that acidophilus.

I am a 35 year old male and have had the "burnt tongue" feeling to various degrees for the past month. Also, the perimeter of the front portion of my tongue appears raised in some areas and smooth and red in others.
I saw an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist this morning and he diagnosed my with Geographic Tongue. He prescribed Oracort, a steroidal based dental paste, for 30 days which he says will help treat the condition. Hope it works...I'll keep you posted.

I'm a dental hygienist who has also taught in my field. A common cause of the "burnt toungue" is a benign condition called geographic tongue (sometimes the tongue has slick red areas next to the normal looking tongue- often with a border. Genetically susceptible people can get what looks like deep fizzures. It can be caused by stress, illness, certain foods (spicy seems to be a biggie). Another cause is a yeast infection, for which the doctor would prescribe a solution to rinse with. Unless a dentist looks at it, a non dental person would have a hard time knowing which was which. The former does not require treatment, and will go away in 10 or so days (and may come back over one's lifetime), but the latter does require professional intervention. Hope this helps!

 This condition seems to be getting out of control. Can someone declare a pandemic?
It is pretty rare, but it may be that you have an allergy to the dental materials used in the fillings. This is more common in the silver/mercury metal fillings.

Just a quick update. After using the Oracort for 4 or 5 days, my symptoms completely disappeared. My tongue still looks like it did when I was experiencing the burnt tongue feeling but I have no symptoms. When the symptoms subsided, I ceased using the Oracort (even though the doctor said to use it for 30 days) so I may have to restart if the symptoms come back.
Best of luck to everyone.

Hi,
I am 27 and have been experiencing the symptoms of burnt tongue for a few days now and am growing concerned. I ate severely hot food on Monday and burnt my entire mouth. The thing is...it should have been gone by now..it is now friday and i am freaking out.
the pain started at the tip of the tongue and palette earea behind the teeth with swollen taste buds and such. now the taste buds have calmed down but that numbing burning sensation still resides over the surface of the tongue. I also have a little bit of a coating on my tongue that is whiteish but doesnt look anything like the thrush white tongue descriptions.
I am hoping i burned my tongue really badly but i think this would have gone away by now. I have gargled with warm salt water to no avail. I am also freaking out because i had a makeout session with someone last sat night and i am hopin this has nothign to do with it...
does anyone know if a burnt tongue can take more than overnight to heal? anyone have any ideas....i cant go to the doctor because i jsut got approved for a surgery that i am having soon and i think this might push back the date....

Well i have had this problem since 2005, i found that all oil triggers it off, including some nuts etc. cigarette smoke also. I found that white vinegar rinsed in mouth alleviates it, stop bleeding gums also for those who have also suffer that. the bacteria on the tongue etc loves any blood that comes from ya gums. i also found that i was low in vitamin C considering i eat lots of fruit. goodluck all

Hi All,
Thanks for all the posts; they are very helpful! My tongue complaints are similar to the others noted. It started during a recent virus where I was experiencing a very dry cough that had me choking and gaging at times. It lasted longer than any other virus and I still have the tongue thing (otherwise healthy). So it very well could be a virus. Dryness may be a component, as well. I am going to take additional acidophillus and use it topically to see if that will do the trick.
After I read all the posts tonight I found additional helpful when I googled:
Burning Mounth Syndrome - Mayo Clinic article at Colgate.com and also at Dentalplans.com.
I lost my sense of smell a few years back after a virus and the internet posts I read at that time were written by people who said it will never return. My sense of smell did. Maybe not as great and sometimes screwy but I can smell wonderful things that I couldn't smell at all before! Bottom line, we must believe that this will pass. In reading the Burning Mouth Syndrome articles it is evident that this condition can disappear as fast as it started.
Good Luck!

:p :) I found this forum a week ago Wednesday when I couldn't sleep because of the pain in my tongue. My symptoms are similar to some on this thread, but I will let you know what they are and what I have done about it. At Thanksgiving I thought I did burn my tongue on hot tea, I had a red tip to my tongue that lasted about a week and a half. It felt burned and very sensitive to spicy foods. Then two weeks later the red tip to my tongue (about 3/4") came back, with no actual burning of the tongue this time and it has stayed. It is sensitive to spicy and very painful. I read about the Acidophilus used topically and got some. I also talked to my massage therapist about my tongue just because it was bothering me and she suggested Nutriferon by Shaklee. Well I started using both of this things one week ago and the pain is gone. The red tip is still there and spicy food is alittle bit touchy but the pain I was having is gone. I don't know if one or the other is helping, but what ever it is I had to write and tell this forum of what worked for me. It isn't gone, but it is livable, which is great. Good luck I hope this helps somebody.:p

I would suggest getting off all that perscription medication, and heading to the all natural store. I just quit smoking and was on Chantix my tongue felt like it was burnt for two weeks after stopping the use of this pill, the strange tongue feeling was definatley caused by this, because its gone now.

I also was glad to find this forum. My problems began 20 years ago with what I had eventually diagnosed at Mayo Clinic as the medical condition that has "geographic tongue" as the common name (I was in my mid-20's at the time and under major stress). I was given a lydocain ointment for the pain, which helped but didn't cure the condition. The Dr. said that it's just something a person needs to live with and avoid the things that make it flare up (strawberries, wine). At least at the time I was glad to find out it wasn't something more serious. I have had 20 years of once/every month or so flare ups and ongoing always a small amount of irritation. About five years, ago fissures were added to my problems, and I went to a dermatologist who explained it all (the fissures had a fancy name and often were associated with geographic tongue), but again said I had to live with it and he gave me a lydocain gel for pain relief. I found that STRESS definitely contributes to the flare ups. The new issue now is that it has expanded to be my full mouth, and especially my lips are swollen. They bleed from brushing. My mouth will feel so bad and lips will be so swollen that it impacts my speech I(in my mind) which is not good at all for work/public events. Right now, I am in the middle of my worst flareup in 20 years, as it has lasted 4 weeks (after a previous 4 week flare up about two months ago). I also think about it all the time when it's flaring and am afraid people can see my swollen lips - very red too. I will try some of the various versions of home remedies noted here and will let you know how it goes. (I previously have tried the peroxide/listerine type washes and they didn't really help.

A beef-red burning tongue is a hallmark symtom of methylcobalamin (natural b12) deficiency. THe burning can come and go almost daily depending upon slight fluctuations in b12 levels. I had a red burning tongue for 20+ years. It was 100% cleared up 10 days after starting Enzymatic Therapy methylb12. So has almost all of my 75 symtoms or so. I have had a near miraculous healing since starting methylb12. THe test is easy, take one either Enzymatic Therapy or Jarrow methylb12 1mg or 5 mg and a b-complex and hopefully other cofactors and the burning tongue is one of the first and fastest things to heal.

I have a burning tongue as well but only on one side. Mine comes from my dentist making my teeth sharper on the top teeth and also crowns that are too bulky on the one side. Mine started after the crowns were put into my mouth. I think there are A LOT more people who are allergic to the crowns in their teeth than dentists want to admit. Either the porcelein or the metal underneath does not agree with the chemistry in the mouth. My mother has had crowns for over 20 years...her old ones give her no troubles but her new ones aggrevate her mouth as well, especially with tuna, canned things, etc. So she told me to eat lots of greens to calm it down. It works for a time. I also put gauze over my teeth on the one side and the burning goes away...mine definitely has much to do from sharp teeth and my crowns.

My tongue also feels burnt, red and raw down edges and thrushy through the middle.
I had what was diagnosed as oral thrush about a month ago, however I'm really beginning to think that my mouth flora were just knocked out completely. I have found for the past year or two that toothpaste makes my skin peel inside my mouth (weird huh?) but not enough to hurt or anything... I am now thinking it may all be to do with compromised mucous membranes. I have one of those bodies that gets mild allergies to everything, so another defective skin barrier is not out of the question.
From what I can glimpse out of the research burning mouth seems to be tied to an overactive inflammatory response... this made sense recalling its onset at work - when I tried to sell jewellery whilst looking and speaking like a chipmunk with nuts in my cheeks...
Am going to try a non-SLS containing toothpaste and avoid Listerine completely, which actually gives me something encroaching a chemical burn. We should probably try to encourage good flora without going in Rambo-style and obliterating the lot. I gather some of the function of the good flora is to balance the bad, and thereby stop our immune system trying to fight off everything without assistance.
On another note, I also suffer from sinus and chronic cystitis, so it might be actually be part of an inflammatory disorder just generally, a lot of people have ailments that correlate to the inflammatory/mucousal barrier issues.

Hi Unregistered,
I bet you have other symtoms too. Take a look at the b12 deficiency symtoms list. So far 100% of your mentioned symtoms are b12 deficiency symtoms. I also had a complete peeling of the inside of my mouth and throat.
A sublingual Jarrow or Enzymatic Therapy methylb12 each day could fix all of your problems if taken with needed cofactors.
Good luck.

I've had the burnt tongue and now its gone! Admittedly I only had it for one week but I just wanted to share my experiences. Oddly it all started when I began taking a multivitamin. I'm not aware of any deficiency but thought I'd take them for good measure. I stopped taking them when the burnt tongue started as I thought that they may have been interfering with the medication I take for my colitis - this medication I have been taking for years without any issues! - I was getting rather annoyed with my tongue but didn't want to hassle the doc so I found this thread. I read about the Acidophilus which is something my doc has always been recommending so I thought I's try it by taking it directly on my tongue and after 2 days I think the burnt sensation has gone! I'll give it a couple more days but so far so good.
i also stopped using my Colgate toothpaste as a precautionary and have changed to Crest.
the Acidophilus may or may not have helped but I just wanted to share my experience as I can see that a lot of you are suffering and although I only had it for a week I know what its like!
I also think that these commercial multivitamins are generally a bad idea! Stick to healthy fresh veg and fruit!
Be well!

Hi, I'm 32, from the UK and have just been to see my GP as I have had a rash on my tongue and this burning sensation as if i scolded my tongue, my jaw at the top near to my right ear seems to have moved, i cannot bite down onto my back wisdom teeth as the pain in my upper jaw bone is unbearable, i cannot open my mouth wide enough to even yawn proper. My GP is treating me with Nystatin Oral Suspension too, however she wants to rule out acute leukemia which apparently a rash on tongue and swollen mouth is a symptom of, I am not too worried as my attitude towards anything like this is what will be will be, however i don't feel in my gut instinct that its anything quite so serious but i am being put through various tests if the Nystatin does nothing. If anyone has anymore info would be grateful. Thank you

I too have been feeling these exact same symptoms ever since I was diagnosed with a sinus infection at the end of January. The internet only scares the crap out of you thinking you have cancer of the mouth or an std or hiv. I have been tested for std's and nothing. I am getting my blood tested in a week for anything and everything...but in the end I am sure that the antibiotics caused this burning mouth/oral thrush.
I take acidipholus daily, but not enough. I am going to try putting it directly on my tongue. I also did 2 6 day treatments with nystatin and it did very little to aid with the symptoms of the burning tongue. I sometimes think it look thrushy again, but the dentist and clinic doctor both said NO! The roof of my mouth and gums around my teeth hurt from time to time, the gums are a little better now.
This has seriously left me neurotic. I have been so afraid that something REALLY aweful is wrong with me, I have never been so nervous about anything. The worst part is that NO ONE can tell me what is wrong! It really sucks. The doctor say that if it was trush the Nystatin would have cleared it up, but I have read differently. I have read that sometimes it takes MONTHS of taking Nystatin the clear it up and that in some cases a suspension fugal treatment or pill is needed.
I am going to try sprinkling the acidophilus on my tongue and may try a candida cleans because I have been told that I have an issue with that in the past. Used to do colonics, but have not in 5 or more years. Was on a pretty strict NO YEAST diet too at that time but have gotten away from it!
This really sucks and I feel for anyone going through the same thing. I only hope for some relief and soon!
Please keep posting to let us all know what has worked for you....

I started getting a burnt tongue and throat in November. Followed by excessive arm and leg fatigue. Come to find out I have a chemical sensitivity to additives in foods.
No not MSG. It's some of the newer additives they're adding to our foods these days. Up until this past Thanksgiving I'd never, ever, reacted to any additive and definitely not MSG.
I cannot tolerate sea salt, carrageenan, xanthan gum and high fructose corn syrup. They all sound natural don't they but they use toxic chemicals to process them.
Here are a few sites of interest. I kept a log of what I ate and started reading labels. It was then I could see the relationship between the chemical and my reaction.

I found this site looking for solutions to my tongue burning. I have read every post on this and went to the drug store and picked up a bottle of Acidophilus, vit.B-12 and mouth wash. I have done two treatments of the Acidophilus and rinsed my mouth 4 times a day for the last two days. I have seen a marked improvement. It isn't gone (yet), but I'm going to continue this treatment path to see where it leads. I can't imagine living with this condition for the rest of my life, so if anyone else out there has other treatments please post them. I have been under a tremendous amount of stress in the last few months and have heard that stress may be a factor. In any event, I'm willing to try any remedy that proves to work.

Hi Torryann,
Do you have a lot of other symptoms?
http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=9948&page=303
Come on over to the b12 deficiency thread and check out the details of what it takes to actually heal these things. First, most people need METHYLB12. I have found only two brands of excellent sublingual methylb12 with predictable results but only when taken with a lot of other vitamin etc cofactors. We have a reasonably complete symptom list over there as burning tongue usually isn't the first and only thing thing a person has, at least not from lack of b12/folate/cofactors.
Maybe There is hope

This thread has been an absolute Godsend to me. I thought I had been going crazy as some of you have. I have been to my GP, my regular dentist and a periodontist. They all have the same blank stare, especially when I go on and on about my symptoms.
Not only do I have most of the symptoms (2 months now) listed in prior posts I also have a slimy feeling in my mouth. I don't know if it is the lining of my mouth sloughing off or what. I have actually lost a crown because of constantly trying to get the slimy feeling off (I think that's why). Now I have to pay BIG bucks to get a new crown and gum surgery to boot.
I too, had taken Zythromyacin or Zythro something. I am wondering if anyone else has contacted them to let them know that this is a possible serious side effect. It started like the 2nd or 3rd day I was in treatment. I was SO sick with some kind of infection in my lungs that I didn't pay much attention to what was going on in my mouth. I also had pretty severe diarrhea while on the medication. I have the white foamy spit, blisters under my tongue, white coated tongue, red bumps on the end, etc. as well.
I guess I will try some of the home remedies and hope they help. I just know I can't take it much longer. I don't know how you all have done for years??? If stresses causes it I am screwed because this is stressing me out more than anything right now.
Will check back with you guys later. Hope you all are better.

I still have the burning tongue condition and a few canker sores to boot, which make eating just about anything flavorful, disappointing! I've been taking B-12 daily, and drinking a green tonic made up of spirolina.. this is not really helping. Any time I have salty or spicy foods, or drink red wine, the burning condition is worse. My tongue looks splotchy and has fissures along the sides. I'm 61 yrs old in good shape but have a lot of stress in my life due to my job. I want to get my old tongue back...and be able to eat and enjoy food.
any ideas out there?

Hi Mamiwatta,

Come on over to the b12 thread and learn about b12 deficiency and how to heal. First, of all the 4 b12 varieties that are availabel, only two actually could contribute significantly to healing. Of the hundreds of brands of these, only three so far have tested out to be reliable in producing results. Further these 3 specific brands of the two natural b12s need to be accompanied by a lot of necessary cofactors to actually be able to heal anything.
So come on over and check ALL your symptoms against the list of symtoms and find out what it takes to actually heal your tongue and other things, if it is a deficiency. Good luck. Simply taking "a b12" can't do the trick for you. Improve your odds. I'm 60 now and the healthiest of my entire life with just about everything that was wrong for decades has healed now.

OK people listen up. I too had the problems with my tongue..Burning tip white coating splits down the middle and on and on..I have read many stories about this..but,After two years myself I realized I had to be my own advocate...And test for candidias are often inclusive with a negative result..That means nothing.....Your tongue has been driving you crazy right. Well if you truly have suffered enough you will take my information to heart...Find a doctor that WILL listen to you...Heres the cure..You need fluconazole. Yes maybe you were prescribed that before...50 mg for 5 days or maybe one pill or maybe the rinse. The problem is that the rinse does nothing and the dosage of wasnt high enough and the lenght of trearment wasnt long enough...Alright..You need fluconazole 200 mg once a day for three to six weeks..if you have had the problem a long time..I suggest 200 mg for six weeks. The problem is a DEEP candidiis infection in your tonge that is very hard to treat...And by the way. One more thing..The peeling of skin in your mouth is the fungi that peels of...Pull it out with you finger..Looks like little white worms doesnt it. Now you know !!
I have the same feeling for 3 months now, Im 34 y/o male from the Philippines it started as a red throat due to acid reflux then came the antibiotics after a week I saw white coating in my tongue and is painful on the sides l tried several bactericidal mouthwash until such time I felt like it has penetrated my throat to the neck down.... then... halitosis!!! I was listening over the radio 2 days ago where a doctor was being interviewed regarding halitosis the best remedy according to him was a probiotic approach. Then he started endorsing a product called Capsulac (contains lactobacillus), after hearing that I went to the nearest Drugstore and bought about a dozen then i went to the supermart bought some YAKULT drink (w/c accdng to commercials contains lactobacillus shirota strain) and some yogurt w/c again contains beneficial bacteria. Now Im on a high lactobacillus diet, in 24 hours I'm feeling better and my halitosis somewhat disappeared overnight and the good thing is I never took those bacericidal mouthwashes no more...
My acid reflux was also somewhat lessened
I hope my condition improves in a week, I will get back here to tell the tale

This will be the last entry I will make on this site...Each person is different and the symptoms will be different for each individual. The symptom that it will start with is a tingling
sensation in the tongue and progress from there. It can and sometimes will make your throat sore and proceed down ones throat know as esophageal candidiasis..Prpboitics will help the symptoms subside but not completely cure it..After you stop using them it Will return. There are different strains of candidiasis..And mine started one week after using antibiotics. Like I ve said..You need to be your own advocate. (And if you have truely suffered long enough you will heed my information.) Here is the answer..its up to you.. I am a 48 year old male and I live in Charlottesville Virginia...
Good Luck

Hey all, I have had all the same symptoms. Burning tongue, tingling sensation, erosion, sores on the sides of tongue, metallic taste, sores on cheeks, white coating on tongue, white spots on inside cheeks, dry mouth, sticky slimy saliva first thing in the morning. I am thinking it is a combination of things causing this problem. I was diagnosed with oral lichen planus buy my dentist. This was verified buy the pictures of the lace like structure indicative of oral lichen planus. I was given an oral rinse Kenalog 0.1%/distilled water. It works great for the burning and the sores as long as I use it every day. If I stop using it the metallic taste comes back and the tingling and the burning and the sores come back in about 3 days and it gets bad.
I think I have candida yeast also and I think that oral lichen planus and Candida are working together. I am trying to get some kind of confirmation on the yeast infection but nothing yet.
I am 40y/o male with excellent health. I get sick less than once a year. I have not taken antibiotics since childhood. I quite smoking 1year 2 months ago, cold turkey.
oral lichen planus is a fungi and candida is also a fungi. I have tried over the counter stuff. Changed toothpaste, mouthwash, tried most vitamins, probiotics, oil of oregano, everything you don't need a prescription for.
I take oral samples for culture every week. I see all the normal flora of the mouth with a huge amount of spores and some hypha's but nothing 100 percent proof. I have a new spore stain kit ordered so maybe that will help.

My wife had the burning tongue/lips/mouth as you guys described. She got it after she had our second baby and had it bad for 4 or 5 months. It was really drive her crazy. She tried the yogurt, iron, vit B, and acidophilus with some good results. The acidophilus mouth rinse method was the most effective and reduced the burning for 3 or 4 hours at a time. Then she decided to try an anti-bio (from mexico) which made it worst. Then she was prescribed Lyrica Cv, and Cerefolin NAC by our family practice doctor. Both medices worked and at very low dosage. She now takes only one pill (either one) when she feels it starting again, which is about every 2 or 3 weeks. Good luck with finding a cure!

WHEW!! the little worm like fungus would freak me out too! In my case I don't have any white coating on my tongue. If anything, my tongue is pink.
I have to say that the burning sensation situation has improved, and my tongue does not look so splotchy with redness like before. What I'm doing differently is taking B12, under my tongue, and also drinking green vibrance every morning with a shot of emergen C to make the taste more palatable.
I'm also making a point of eating more fresh green veggies. I'm at least hopeful the burning tongue sensation will go away... I'll keep you posted.:)

Hi Mamiwatta,
For best effectiveness there arte two brands of methylb12 that functionally tested far superior to most other brands, Enzymatic Therapy and Jarrow Formulas. For most predictable healing this should be taken sublingually and allowed to linger 45 minutes or more if possible, or tucked between your front upper gum and lip or elsewhere in cheek. Along with the methylb12 (this is the natural active form with predictable results) a b-complex (B-Right from Jarrow is excellent and includes a little methylb12) twice a day; also Zinc, calcium, magnesium, vitamins A,D,E,C. These will also help take care of many various skin problems anywhere on your body. How many other symptoms do you have that are on the b12 list? http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?p=100703&posted=1#post100703 to talk about these issues. A burning beef-red tongue is the b12 specific description. The scalding feel precedes this beef-red phase. Sores in the mouth, splits at the corners of your lips (associated with folate deficiency as well), stomach and intestinal inflamation and problems are common too. All this often includes fatigue but not always. Tingles or worse in hands and feet are also common and usually reversable if treated soon enough. Methylb12 plus cofactors are the treatment.
Guys just an update
I'm feeling better now and am still continuing my high lactobacillus diet, my tongue is clear already of those stubborn spots. Lactobacillus works w/ me

Did you ever use Cool Mint Listerine Breath Srips? I'm totally sure that hurt my tongue, I used those things 4 to 6 daily. For a year and sparingly for 3 years.

I'm 40 and I sympathized with all of you who have a burned mouth. In my case, I used Cool Mint Breath Strips sparingly for about 3 or four years but last year I used it everyday about 4 to 6 strips. My tongue was fine before, but all of the sudden I felt I burned easily with food, the spices on food hurt me, salt, etc. and my teeth became over sensitive. I finally could not put one of those breath strips in my mouth without crying. I stopped its use but now I have esophaguitis and gastritis and a cracked hurt tongue. I'd like to know if any of you have ever used this product as much as I did.:(
I'm 21 and I just got these symptoms a few days ago. I woke up with what seemed like a burnt tongue and it's been 3 maybe 4 days and the tip of my tongue still hurts REALLY bad when pressure is applied or I scrape it against rough foods or my teeth. I'm going to see the doctor ASAP. Could I have gotten it from kissing someone?
I have this too. I think mine is caused by using Listerine Whitening mouthwash. It totally burned my tongue and mouth and a month later it's still not better!
I used to use it every few days and then I noticed everything tasted a bit salty on the days I'd used it. Then one day it got really bad and I had a really strong horrible salty taste in my mouth all the time. I googled it and found that other people had had this when using this mouthwash (and other whitening products). I chucked out the rest of the mouthwash and the salty taste disappeared after about 8 (unpleasant) days. Now (about 3 weeks later) it's gone, but my tongue still feels burned and has a weird metallic taste all the time. Can a chemical burn to your tongue take that long to recover from? Has anyone else had REALLY long lasting effects after using this mouthwash, that continue even after you've stopped?
PS. Don't use that mouthwash! It seriously BURNED my mouth and didn't even make my teeth whiter in the process!

I am a 30 year old male who has had similar symptoms for the last 14 months. Not sure if it was started by stress or not. Noticed it around the time I french kissed someone. Those two events might not even be related however. Either way, started with some tingling and itching in the throat. At first I thought it was allergies. Then parts of my mouth would burn. The burning would be on the lips, on the side of the tongue, on the front of the tongue, or even on the inside of the cheeks. I went to the doctor and he said my mouth looked fine. They did a blood test and it came back normal. Feeling stressed, I started to look around on line for answers. Of course I stumble onto sites that talk about STDs.....ex..oral warts and herpes. This of course, really stressed me out. I examined my tongue more closely and noticed really small white spots. I went into the doctor again and he told me that getting HPV in the mouth is very rare. He said he didn't see any warts in my mouth. He then did a herpes test which came back negative. To make an already long story a little shorter...I returned to the doctor a few more times. Each time I was told that there was nothing wrong with me. It's frustrating not knowing what it is. I havne't even kissed anyone in the last 14 months because I'm afraid that whatever I have is contagous. Anyway, I can relate to all of you. It seems strange to me that there seems to be a lot of people with this problem and no solution. I've been using a mouthwash for mouth sores...regular mouthwash burns to much. I've also been taking a vitamin. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything. Thanks for listening.

I'm still frustrated, it's been a few months I will say a year and I'm still the same, I tried the medicine for Candidiasis but didn't help. I tried mouth wash that burn even worse and nothing, I tried drinking and taking lactobacilus and nothing. I still think it was caused by those Listerine Cool Mint breath strips because mint is too strong when used too often plus other ingredients used in those like the ones in the mouth washes. Please let me know if you used any of the Listerine products with mint flavor. I wish you all luck.

But I can tell you that he did not use any of the Listerine mouth washes, breath strips or teeth whitening products. I am so sure that that did it. The problem is that how do we cure a burned tongue. Is it burned forever? I hope not. But we need healing! Someone help us, please. My tongue is also cracked greatly. Did you use any of those Listerine products?

hi again,i think the antibiotic you are talking about is ZITHROMAX, GENERIC IS AZITHROMYCIN,,very powerful, i don;t want it. you have got to get a culture taken for thrush,,before taking any antibiotic you should start on probiotics.
if you get meds for thrush, if they say rinse and spit it out, DON'T, it will help the yeast in your gut, plus help your mouth.

Thank youhi, your post made me think about a doctor in germany, was treating 3 kids with leukiemia, and all 3 came down with thrush, they were treated with nystatin, believe it or not tthere leukemia went away, but you should look into [ knowthecause.com] there you can learn about fungus and cancer link.

Steve
doctors did not learn anything on candida albicans, i still have similar problems, now its build up of bacteria, i use hydrogen peroxide, on a kinda flat tongue brush. when i had chronic thrush, i learned also on my own, that i also developed sugar intolerance, and b12 deficiency, because of the sugar intolerance, nystatin didn't work, only thing for me was nizoral, also if doctor doesn't see a white coating on the tongue, then no you not have it, like they don't realize like with other things you don't have to have 100 per cent of something in order to be diagnosed with something, insist on a culture. and i might add i had been on a very high sugar diet, which was the cause of my chronic thrush.
Hi again,
I didn't use those tongue strips, but I used toothpaste with the mini breathstrips in it, as well as the whitening toothpaste. Don't know which of those did it (or if it was a combination of both) but it is definitely that because I am happy to say it is slowly getting better now that I am using no mouthwash and just normal toothpaste!
I am not totally better yet, but after 3 months of not using any whitening/mint strip products, it is getting less and less. The burning is only at the very front of my tongue now, and it is getting milder every day :)
For those of you who have this after using crazy mouthwash, I can just recommend that you STOP using those products and just use normal mild toothpaste (and maybe use a salt mouthwash sometimes) and just wait for AGES until your tongue recovers! And YAY - it does get better eventually! I thought it might be permanent...

Hi,
Have you seen any improvement in your burned tongue. I too feel like I suffered a chemical burn to my tongue. I have suffered since Sept 07. I have been to numerous doctors. I too used Crest whitening mouthwash and crest white expressions toothpaste. Right away I quit using both. I could not use any toothpaste for several months. Now I can use the sensodyn sensitive toothpaste. I am desperate for any suggestions and will it ever totally heal?

i hav solved MY "burnin" feeling. i hav had a very pink area on the tip of my tongue. that is the area that feels like its burnin. i thought i had sum sort of illness or sumting. but closer inspection. i ihave noticed that my tooth is kinda chipped. its really really tiny chip that i didnt notice be either. i guess constant friction between my tongue in that sharp area caused it 2 feel like its burnin. i suggestion people with the same situation take a closer look at their teeth. cuz that might be the source of the problem. of course this is based on my inspection. u may actually hav an illness.

My daughter had these symptoms - felt as if she had burnt her tongue, her tongue turned white, it developed crack in the middle of it, she had a bad taste in her mouth -- all this in the last month of her pregnancy. Doctors agreed it looked like yeast and prescribed a Nystatin mouth wash that helped somewhat but after she'd refilled the prescription three times she still had symptoms. The acidophelous treatment recommended here also helped a bit but symptoms persisted. Gentian violet irritated her mouth so she discontinued it. The doctors said they probably couldn't clear it up while she was pregnant. Four to five days after delivery, she began to feel nauseous. One of the midwives suggested it might be due to the yeast infection and suggested trying grapefruit seed extract. (Sure enough, the baby developed thrush a yeast infection in the mouth, at 5 days old). I found my daughter an organic grapefruit seed extract with no preservatives (a Canadian product). Within two days her tongue was entirely pink. She still has some red bumps on her tongue from the infection. She is continuing to take the grapefruit seed extract to be sure she gets the overgrowth of yeast out of her system. Apparently some strains of yeast have become resistant to the treatments that used to work. Don't assume you don't have a yeast problem just because the first yeast cures you try don't work.

Thank you for your response. I think maybe I should try the grapeseed extract. I had several blood, saliva, and stool tests that showed I did not have candida, But maybe I do. I guess it can't hurt to take the grapeseed extract. In all the tests I found out I was allergic to soy, wheat, wheat gluten. So I have completely changed my diet. Soy is in everything!!!
Let me know if your daughter gets better. How is her baby?

i heard that was good stuff, wild oregano, good to, when all is well i'd do probiotics, i don't think that would enterfere with breast feeding, actually, would have been good while pregnant, cause the better your stomach flora, the better for baby to. so how are they treating baby?
everyone should learn more on yeast, it's bad stuff, science is starting to show how it can change our DNA. , cause cancer, make you think you have a thyroid problem, LOTS MORE, check out doug kaughman, at knowthecause.com, plus you can get his program on satelite, i have direct tv on the east coast at 2;00 pm, channel 368. watch his show on puter.

The grapefruit seed extract I bought for my daughter also had oregano oil in it. (The website said it was a recent addition.) She is using the drops although it is also available in capsules. The are treating the baby with gentian violet as recommended by a different one of the midwives (the baby developed the thrush after the grapefruit seed extract recommendation for my daughter was made and before we were able to acquire it). On the website for the Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation you can view a couple of handouts on treating candidiasis (yeast) in babies and breastfeeding mothers. They do recommend grapefruit seed extract for the mother both internally and/or on the nipples if the nipples or breasts are infected but for the baby I think their recommendations were gentian violet and/or acidophelous. Perhaps this is because the grapefruit seed extract is very bitter and must be diluted for use.

Happyone- note that I wrote GRAPEFRUIT seed extract NOT grape seed extract. I made the same mistake at first as I had seen grape seed extract available in many pharmacies. I had to go to a natural food store to get the grapefruit seed extract. The brand I got is INNO-VITE.
Hi,
Have you seen any improvement in your burned tongue.
You poor thing - it must be driving you NUTS! Mine has healed by itself, thankfully. I think it took about 6-8 weeks from when I stopped using the mouthwash to heal. But I was only using it 2 or 3 times a week (not twice a day like the bottle suggests!), so maybe your tongue got way more burned than mine. All I can suggest (aside from chucking out the whitening products, and using mild toothpaste which it sounds like you've already done) is swishing warm salty water around your tongue every few days. It seemed to work for me. Hope it gets better soon

People who developed symptoms after using strong oral hygiene products may have developed a yeast (or other) infection after the products they were using upset the balance of the ecosystem in their mouths (throats etc.) As many women know, it is quite common to develop a yeast infection after taking antibiotics because the antibiotics have knocked out the "good" bacteria that normally keep the yeast in check. Virtually everyone has yeast at least in their gut and on their skin. Problems develop when their is an overgrowth. If the oral hygiene products wiped out the good bacteria in their mouths, yeast may have taken over.

I had this problem for a week. It was driving me nuts. I started taking vitamin B supplements and it was gone in a less than 2 days. I don't know if this would work for everyone but apparently having a vitamin b deficiency causes this burning tongue sensation and taking the supplement was what cured it for me. I hope this helps.

Please update us here on the forum if you guys figure out what is causing your problem.'
I am 25 and I am dealing with the same thing i dont know what it is as the doc has treated me diflucan and it did not work but it burns and I was wondering if u found out what it was and if u cured how did u do it.

I too am experiencing the pain. I think it's very important that we all think of the steps leading up to the first symptoms, i.e. changes in diet, use of new products (mouthwash, toothpaste, gum, candy, etc.), sexual activity, drugs or medications and anything new that may have contributed to this reaction.
Symptoms:
burning tongue
sore/scratchy throat
teeth hurting
white coating on tongue
slight cracking down center of tongue
terrible headaches
dry mouth
fatigue
more sneezing than usual
No fever at all.
staph infection on scrotum
itchy and burning feeling on genital skin
slight sensation in urinary tract
Possible contributers:
exposure to something at std clinic when blood was drawn
exposure to something at vaccination clinic when Hep A & B boosters were given.
Hep A & B vaccinations
Teeth whitening agents in mouthwash and toothpaste
Infection from oral sex or intercourse
high sugar diet
stress
full course of euthromycin (oral tab antiboitic)
Here is my story...
I'm a 40 year old male (think we should all mention our gender). Up until now I have looked and felt great, especially for my age. I have always been very blessed with good health and do not take any medications on a regular basis - not even for allergies.
A few weeks ago I had sex with a woman including oral sex. That day I also used her mouthwash with teeth whitener in it and showered after sex as I am very concerned about hygeine.
A few days later (3 to 5) I noticed the back of my tongue hurting (far back and lower like throat or gland area). I went to brush my teeth (almost always brush my tongue so I look at my tongue often) and WOW it was covered with a white coating. I have had slight coatings before if i was sick, but this time was the worst. It scared me it was so bad. My first thought was some sort of bacteria from the oral sex. I started a process of using a tongue scraper and rinsing with peroxide and this helped but it kept coming back. I tried salt water rinses too. It wasn't sore so I didn't go to the doctor. This slight irritating feeling went on for about 5 days and then BAM! I felt like razor blades were in my throat.
I went to the doctor and he felt like the oral sex timing was a coincidence. The first thing he said when he looked at my throat was that it didn't look like herpes. I was shocked he even mentioned herpes not realizing you could get that in your mouth or throat. He thought it looked like strep and was going to test, but after I asked him how much the test was (I don't have insurance), he said he didn't need to test and was going to treat me regardless of the result and he gave me euthromycin and I took 2 that day (throat pain was an 8 out of 10 at the doctor; I literally was in tears and I have a high tolerance for pain). The next morning all pain was almost completely gone and it was gone by the end of the day. I still finished the course of antibiotics.
I felt awesome for about a week and only a slight coating on the tongue. Then I had oral sex again and BAM! my tongue started hurting again, this time it was underneath in one of the two glands right under your tongue. This stopped hurting after a few days and then I had off and on again scratchy throat for over two weeks. It never really hurt though.
I figured it was some kind of bacteria so I started using an orange flavored mouthwash in the mornings and a flouride wash in the evenings.
I also went to a clinic and got tested for pretty much every std a male can test for. HSV-1 was positive for exposure and everything else they would tell me over the phone was negative.
The same day I went in for this screening I also had my Hep A & Hep B boosters (vaccinations due to travel to South America not because of sexual lifestyle). Now this could be a coincidence but I'll mention it just in case. My boss broke out with blisters on his hands and feet a few days after his first vaccination. It was a disease that children get that is related to staph and strep.
The irritating feeling in my throat and tongue had been off an on for about three weeks now. Other than that and slight fatigue I felt good. Then a few days I started getting headaches (very rare for me like one day in a year) and my genital area started feeling an itchy burning sensation in random areas of the skin and maybe a slight burning sensation when urinating but I wasn't sure if I was imagining it. I could not see any problems. When the burning and headaches started I got very scared because these are the early symptoms of herpes which I had been reading about all the stds.
Then a few days ago I woke up with this feeling of my tongue being scorched by a hot liquid. The day before I had eating a lot of popcorn (salty) and had been eating a lot of sweets for a few days. I looked at my tongue and there was a little red patchy area near the edge of the tip. I was scared now thinking herpes of the mouth. The next day the burning feeling was gone but the red area still there and the edges of my tongue were beginning to look rough.
The next night I was lying in bed and my scrotum area felt like it was burning so I went and looked at it and discovered a bump/blister looking area. Two days later I went to the doctor.
I was so concerned about this bump I didn't make a big deal of my burning tongue (had only happened one day) but I did tell her about it and show her my tongue. She thought the tongue looked normal.
The place on my scrotum was in a hair follicle. She said it was a staph infection. She also said she sees no signs of std and thinks the timing of the two oral sex experiences followed by throat problems were coincidences.
She gave me Bactrim DS 800-160 which was substituded with SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 and Doxycycl HYC 100MG in addition to a topical antibiotic for the bump on my scrotum called Mupirocin 2%.
I have never run any fever through all of this by the way, even when my throat felt like razor blades to the point of causing me tears.
On second day of antibiotics, my burning tongue is hurting again (had stopped hurting but still looked the same). Now the headache, burning tongue, dryness of the mouth and teeth hurting is almost constant.
After reading this forum I have started putting the Acidophilus on my tongue. I'm not taking it orally as I do not want to interfere with my antibiotics for the staph.
I have also started brushing with baking soda. I noticed last night the toothpaste I have been using says, "extra whitening." Just finished up the whole tube coincidentally.
I am going to cut out sugars and salts, drinks lots of water and try to eat healthier.
Forgot to mention indigestion has become a problem over the last few days and it's normally not an issue for me.
So that's where I am now. I was so detailed in hopes that I can help other people and maybe someone can help me. We should all take the time to contribute and followup. It seems like some people on these forums just disappear. Maybe they get better and are so happy they do not feel the need to come post results. Please remember to help others so it's important to post even if you're cured and back to your normal life.
If this is from a product, we need to get together and fight the company. If this is std related we need to expose it. Whatever it is, the internet is an amazing tool that will allow us to share information and find answers to things that were never before possible.
My theory is that I picked up a yeast or some kind of bacterial infection from oral sex and intercourse. The antibiotics knocked out the infection but also killed off good bacteria, then second exposure to yeast through oral sex allowed it to come back stronger. Staph infection and burning in genital area could be unrelated or if it's related it could be from a weakened immune system due to yeast and ant
