View Full Version : Painful white bumps on tongue

I have had several recurrences of painful white bumps toward the back and on the sides of my tongue. I also had noticed before this recent episode what appeared to be thrush or a white coating on my tongue. I had drank several beers on New Year's Eve the night before this recent episode. I also had used a spicy cinnamon gum, which seemed to give me tingling and irritation to these areas of my tongue. Now although the thrush appears to have gone away, I have tiny white bumps that may actually be swollen taste buds, but they are so utterly painful. I can hardly eat they are so painful. Based on past episodes, this usually subsides in a matter of days. I have been doing salt-water rinses which only give temporary relief. I also feel malaise, which makes me wonder if this is a virus. I also wear a mouth guard and wonder if this has anything to do with it. A few months ago I went to get the bumps checked out. A swab was taken to test for Herpes, but the results were negative. Acidity in foods does seem to make it worse, but I feel burning anytime I eat something now. Any suggestions or others with the same?

I have the same exact problem. The white bumps start out as little blisters (papillae are just red and blistery and swollen) and they turn white in a day or two. They usually last about a week and boy, do they hurt! I'm waiting to hear back from my dentist now about it. I only starting getting them a year ago, after I had my wisdom teeth out.

i get this constantly also. Let me know what your doctor says please, whenever i go to a doctor they always attribute it to canker sores and I am not satisfied with their answer. Mine have been occurring more frequently lately and im not sure why.

Canker sores and mouth ulcers can be caused by a virus, or by a vitamin/nutritional deficiency, or by Candida. if you had thrush, then you have candida overload and need to do a cleanse to rid your body of the overgrowth. Threelac is brilliant for this. You can place a packet directly on the tongue and let it sit and dissolve before you swallow. It really helps. Google Threelac for more info - great stuff!!

Another remedy is plain unsweetened yogurt placed on the tongue - this is also very soothing.

Nutritional deficiencies to look into include iron, niacin, lysine, Pyridoxine (B6), Riboflavin, B12, and if bleeding gums, vit C.

Hope this helps,

I get white bumps on the tip of my tongue if I have been eating too much sugar. For example, if I eat two hard candies in a row, white bumps will appear the next day?

Why? I don't know but I have had this problem for years and I currently have one (4 cookies yesterday) so I am searching for an answer to like everyone else.

I have the same thing happen to me when I eat foods that contain citric acid or vinegar. I can't have most fruits or thing like ketchup, mustard, etc. Try staying away from those and you'll see a big difference. Everyonce and awhile I'll get a huge craving for fruit and yogurt and then i usually regret it.

Ya, I've seemed to link the white bumps on my tongue to too much of one of these: sugar, citric acid, or alcohol. And when I combine them all over a few days it makes it hard for the bumps to heal.

I usually get the white taste buds 1-2 days after burning my tongue (after eating food that was too hot). Growing up, I was told that after you burn your tongue, some of your taste buds "die" and they turn white during the process. Is this true?

i have this too & im scared that its herpes but they've never appeared anywhere but the edges of my tongue, as herpes appears mostly on the lips. the doctor said it was canker sores (which i am prone to) but i really need a solution because im really freaked out.. its been about 8 months.

I have had the same white, EXTREMELY painfull bumps all over my tongue before. It also occured the morning after drinking alcohol. They hurt so bad, even when I barely touched my tongue. I couldn't eat anything. I tried a few different things like oragel, but the thing that gave me the most relief was warm salt water. Also baking soda (a little) mixed with warm water. I rinsed my mouth out several times a day with the mixtures and the mysterious white bumps were gone within a few days.

Okay people. These things are called 'Acid Bumps' and are caused by weak amune systems or bad allergies to acidic consumables (That means stuff you eat with acid in it). I get them when I eat Tomatos, Pineapple, Oranges, Lemons, Limes...and any other number of fruit. Pretty much to stop them you just gotta find out what caused them and never consume that thing again.

I always heard they were called sugar bumps. I've had one or two for about a week now, its driving me crazy. Usually gargaling with hotsalt water helps, or mixing about a capful of peroxide and gargaling that helps. Dont drink it. Hope you find a solution. :)

I'm sure everyone in here is going to think i have lost my mind
But around 2001 I started haveing the same thing happen to me,
the bumps would hurt like nobodys buisness, when i would eat something like peanut butter captian crunch,oh...my...goodness.
But yet at the same time i had alot of other stomach issues going on.
Everytime i would mention these bumps to a dr the first thing they would do is give me a aids test,(neg).
Finally I wnt to a GI Dr and was diagnosed with chrones disease,
ulcerictus colitus (not sure how to spell it) and acid reflux.
after i started all the meds to treat the stomach problems thepainfull bumps went away.I never asked the Dr why but im assuming it had something to do with the acid from my stomach.
So maybe this is something you should check into.
GOOD LUCK because i do feel ypur pain
please let me lnow what you find out.

Some people have a high pain tolerence, you have a low one. I can only guess, but it may be due to your nerves. I don't want to sound repetitious, but have you studied that link i posted? Because it will supply you with the answers you seek. Sure, i could spend hours searching for more information, but what good would it do if you aren't going to study it. Here's the deal, the next post to this subject, if you answer in the affirmative, then i will continue to search. Do you agree to these terms? if you do post back and let me know. Thank you :D

I am so relieved i thought they were serious but now i know they are not.

Can they also be to do with a hole in the tooth? as i have a small holw in my tooth and the tiny lumps are on the same side as the hole.

Don't be freaked out, I have had this stuff start to happen to me within the past few months. I have been tested for herpes 3 times - It's not herpes. My tongue burns/tingles and its so painful I want to rip it out...My Dr. has given my nystatin and it does not work. Mouth rinses don't work, they almost make it worse, the alcohol in the rinses can make them worse. Even been to my dentist and no answers. I have basically cut everything out of my diet. I should be loosing about 20 pounds in a few weeks.... I am told that these things can be caused by stress... No one has given me a good reason to why they occur and how to get rid of them. I need to find out soon cuz they are driving me crazy.

My bumps at the far back of my tongue are not painful but I just discovered them when looking at my tongue. It was sooo painful, burning, stinging like pain and then saw the bumps. Taste buds?? no other bumps anywhere in my mouth. Also the sides of my lips are feeling split. I have had quite a lot of dental work in past 2 months and thought maybe due to all this going on in my mouth so called my cousin and ENT. His nurse said no, I needed to come in this morning and let him look at my tongue.
1) I smoke
2) I have reflux
3) I drink coffee from 5 to noon then on cokes till bedtime...with sugar in both
My Internal Medicine doctor has looked in my mouth recently and he saw nothing other than drainage and said take a daily antihistimine. Lab work has been good other than my GGT test showed my on the low side but he said it must have been a lab error and needed repeating at some point.
No sexual activity in so long I don't even know what that is...lol.
This is just to let you know another out here is having same symptoms...I am trying to talk myself out of the 45 mile drive just to look in my mouth.

1) Quit smoking- I know this is HARD, but just do it and get the support you need. If you don't quit, then I doubt your symptoms will really improve, that is just my opinion.

2) acid reflux -this may improve with drinking WATER and quitting smoking.

3) That is way too much caffeine and sugar...stop doing this and see if your symptoms improve. Coke leaches important essential minerals from your body - you are most likely nutrient deficient. Cut down to two cups coffee/day and eliminate the sodas...

I am sorry if I sound harsh, but if you don't make the lifestyle changes needed for wellness, then you are going to have many more problems with your health down the road. There is a certain amount of personal responsibility that comes with good health. Please just consider this and make some good changes!

Best wishes

Wow - this is EXACTLY what I have (constantly) and it hurts to bad. When I have it I can't eat anything hot, spicey or ever carbonated. But ..... I also have one more thing - horrible splits in the corners of my mouth - these hurt far more that the tongue. I have been told that it is an overgrowth of yeast, I sure must have a bunch of it then . I have tried everything I can think of - tea tree gel, fungal cream, neosporin and nothing works. Please ya'll, help me find some relief.

{:) I hate it when I make a "Wrong Diagnosis" so for now, what ever medication your taking, try some of this. It can't hurt, It helped Me..}
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance.

I have two of them, and they hurt bad. The first one is on the tip of my tounge, and has lasted now for two weeks (No Kidding!), and the second one is in the middle of my tounge, and I got it only yesterday; it only gets worse!
My mother made me drink some proxide water, and it seems to work. I'v been having these things for about a year now, I HATE THEM! Also, to stop them pain for a while, dry of your tounge. But once your tounge is wet again, they start to hurt again. People should make a medicene for the bumps.

I get them too, and even one or two on your tongue will make the ENTIRE tongue hurt, and sometimes your whole mouth. The soreness just seems to spread and spread. Sometimes I gargle with peroxide, and they become much less sore the next day.

I have a bunch on the back of my tounge and from some research I did on the internet I have surmised (although I am no expert and dont claim to be) that I have candidias which arises from a fungal infection. I have just gotten over strepthroat and have been on antibiotics for the last three weeks. The antibiotics killed the strep bacteria as well as the good bacteria that everyone naturally has that helps fight disease and and fungal infections. I've had it for about a week now, my tounge is a little sore but I am still able to eat and drink without much difficulty. I have noticed that spicy foods tend to hurt a little bit more than regular food. I just tried the warm salt water thing today and it burned pretty bad, but it felt better afterward. I'm on antibiotics for the next three days so hopefully it will clear up afterwards. Also I read that candidias can also affect the skin and I had noticed right around the same time that my skin would get red as if from a rash around areas where I bent a lot (neck, inside elbow, wrists).

This started happening to me a few years ago. It started with a really bad sore throat and then I started noticing the bumps on the side back parts of my tongue. The doctor tested me for herpes, but it came out negative. I noticed now it tends to show up with certain foods like chocolate or sweet things and also salty foods. I get it now about every other month and it only lasts for about a day. If it is painful for you, you can try using Cepacol throat lozenges, they will numb your mouth, or a chloraseptic spray. It could just be some kind of irritation to the taste buds..

i have a white bump on the side of my tongue at the moment. i don't know if i burned it or ate something i wasn't supposed to, but i've had it for about 4 days now and it's still not going away. yeah, drying it off helps a little. what i have found that helps, and it cleanses the sore is colgate peroxyl. it' pretty much peroxide, but it is minty flavored, so i can tolerate it a lot more. it makes the pain go away for about 2 or 3 hours. you can find it in the tooth paste aisle if anyone wants to try it.

Hi !
I had your symptoms plus more.
I spent 10,000 $ to find out that I have acid reflux.
I had sore throat, white bumps on my tongue, white dots on my lips, heart pressure, headache, and could not breath well. Talk with your dad about acid reflux. You have some of the symptoms. I checked with an ETN doctor, internal doctor, allergist, dermatologist and I even had a CAT scan.

I have been getting these painful white bumps on my tongue for years now. It does seem to be when I eat certain fruits, and also certain kinds of citrus candies as well. I am convinced that I have food allergies. I just had surgery last week and my throat was extremely sore from the breathing tube (sores and all :-(). I have been eating fruit ice-pops - BIG MISTAKE!!! Now the sores in my throat are worse and my tongue is covered all around on the sides with those awful bumps!
I will be sure to keep you posted. I plan to go to an allergy doctor as soon as I heal from this surgery!!! It is nice to know that I am not the only one with this problem. Doctors usually say "oh, it is probably nothing". One called it "map tongue"??? I plan to get to the bottom of this and I will be sure to let everybody know what I find out! Take care!

Hay everyone. Sorry for bad English.

One month ago both sides of my tounge started hurting like hell! It lasted for about 4 days and it was the worst pain in my mouth ever. After 4 days the pain went away and I did not know what was the cause.

Untill today. I took Wrigleys Big Red cinnamon gum. After a couple of hours my tounge started hurting again. Then I remembered I had that same gum one month ago!!! It is this gum (actually the cinnamon oil or whatever they use) that couses that! I am never ever going to chew any cinnamon gum!

Anyway, yogurt seems to help alot - I found that out accidentaly. Apart from that, you just have to ride it out.

if anyone is still curious those little painful white bumps on your tongue are most likely called lye bumps or lie bumps (transient lingual papillitis) which is kind of an inflammation to your taste buds (fungiform papillae)this can be caused by either trauma to your mouth (ex.biting tongue/cheek, pressure from kissing or oral) or by acidy foods or by stress but there is no cure for them they just have to go away on there own now there is something called magic or miracle mouthwash that some people swears helps with the pain its a mixture of benedryl and maalox and sometimes has a topical pain reliever in it. you can ask your pharmicist about it or your dentist/doctor either one should be able to help you. there is also a thing called Victory V is a British brand of liquorice-flavoured lozenges that helps sooth the pain also but i believe that only available over the internet from the UK if its available here in the USA i am not sure >this information came from 2 differant dentist in the Ohio State University Oral and Maxillifacial surgery department

I have had this problem myself for years now. The doctor and dentist have been little help although the doctor suggested taking folic acid in up to 1 mg doses and the dentist suggested eating yogurt. Both good suggestions for general health it would seem but it did not put a stop to my problem. So far I have not discovered any food links in terms of causing the problem or eliminating the problem. I used to get canker sores a lot when I was younger. At some point in my early to mid 20s those became rare but these tongue bumps emerged.

Several people have mentioned stress which is an issue I have noticed. Related to this is the amount of sleep I am getting. The only constant I find is that these bumps are my early warning system that I am getting sick, overly stressed, or overly tired. Typically getting more sleep helps them go away more quickly or even prevents the outbreak entirely if I feel them starting.

Other suggestions:
Take a painkiller (Motrin, Aspirin, Ibuprofin) during the outbreak. It doesn't eliminate the pain but takes enough of the edge off that I am not ready to yank my tongue out of my mouth by the end of the day.

Use a mouthwash regularly and hold it as long as possible. I use Listerine. It hurts like hell but if my mouth is clean the sores feel better. It also seems to desensitize them for awhile and provide some relief.

Use a plastic mouthguard. My dentist made me one to prevent me from grinding my teeth and to relax my jaw at night. It also has the added benefit of keeping you from rubbing the sores against your teeth. When the outbreak is bad, wearing this when I can provides enough relief that I can focus on what I am doing.

General health. In recent years I lost weight, began exercising more, and eating better. I have found that the better my health the less frequent the outbreaks as well as the less severe. In the last 3 years I have had less of a problem due, I believe, to my improved health. 6 or 7 years ago, there were days when I didn't think I stand it. I couldn't focus and I wanted to just rip my tongue out. I really hurt.

Finally, I find it interesting that so little seems to be known about this condition. I rarely come across someone who admits to having ths problem so it does not seem all that common.

Exactly. It has everything to do with being run down. When I was younger and partied alot, I would get these. So did my friends. We even called them "party bumps". I don't party anymore, but still get them from time to time. I'm a fireman, and find that I get them after I work a shift that doesn't let me get much sleep. If I'm up all night, I can usually count on getting them in the next day or two if I don't catch up on sleep. They hurt like heck, but I usually can get rid of them quickly by grabbing one at the base with some pointy tweezers, holding it, and lopping the top off with a razor blade. It will bleed alot, but will feel better immediately, which is better than waiting a day or two for them to go away by themselves.

I was so glad to run across this post. I thought I was the only one that was experiencing this. It used to get so bad with me that I would bite them off.
I was able to link mine to hard candy as well (although suger free) and occasionally sugar free gum (cinnamon only). Avoiding sucking on anything too long has nearly eliminated reoccurences.

I've had the problem previously too. I'd just like to confirm something previously mentioned in a couple threads. The problem is stomach related stomach ulcers and acid reflux can cause those sores on your tongue ,throat and mouth. Generally acid reflux up through the throat sometimes overnight and unnoticeable damages your throat & tonsil area, it also destroys good bacterial in your mouth that keep in check the bad bacteria and fungi(sugar feeding bacteria and thrush fungi are the source of the problem). This condition also can be brought on by over use of strong mouthwash or antibiotics ,also rinsing with hydrogen peroxide(witch can cause very bad acid reflux also if swallowed). best fixes are fix the acid reflux with medication and elevating your bed slightly, and replace the good bacteria by means of yogurt and or raw milk.

You guys ever heard of geographic tongue? Could this be your problem? Do a search on this condition and see if the simptoms apply to you.

I have a geographic tongue and I cannot eat spicy food or use the regular mouth wash solution since the next day my tongue will feel like on fire. Due to this condition, I have a very sensitive tongue, and I often get alergic reactions to some medications or foods I eat, and they manifest by white painful sores on the side of my tongue. They usually go away after a few days. I recommend whenever having a sore blister in your mouth to use water with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) as mouth wash (1 teaspoon per glass - always make it fresh)

I hope this helps, I know how hard it is not to have a name to your condition. It took a year for me to finaly get to a dentist who told me that I have geographic tongue, and there is not need to worry.

I get these also when I eat too much candy. I usually only get them on the tip of my tongue, and they get really big and white. I will try the yogurt treatment that someone above me suggested.

Actually all this talk of bumpy tongues makes me hungry!!!
I think it is a blockage of the tastebuds. Can you still taste over
that spot??

I dont know how to cure them but I know that if you put salt on the spots then it will be painful at first but after the sting is gone wash the salt off and it will be numb to the point where you can barely feel it. It usually numbs for thirty minutes and I use it when it is so uncomfortable that I cant get to sleep.

I have 3 right now canker sores on my lower lip. The unfortunate coincidence is they appeared 2 days after i gave my bf oral (not an std though i just had tests done) however i am a long term sufferer of cankers and i usually use salt. Salt isnt working!! i dunno what to do but wait. I had the bump on my tongue too but that has gone away. My immune system is consistently low so i think its related. Also they say mouth trauma like sharp teeth or irratation cause them so maybe when i did oral it annoyed my mouth.

to add insult to injury i ate cinnimon gum yesterday now my tongue is tingling and all weird if i put salt on it it burns!!! i dont have a film on my tongue and its not swollen or anything it just tingles! i ate like 7 pieces of gum yesterday and i usually NEVER EAT CINNIMON GUM...

thanks 4 all the advice i read every1 more advice would be appriciated

I used to get chronic canker sores and they were so incredibly painful and took forever to heal!! I have since stopped using any commercial toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate, and take a good multivitamin ( vit C, B complex, and iron def can cause these)...

It has been a LONG time since I've had any of these. Please try this. I get my toothpaste from the healthfood store - Jarrow and NOW make some good ones. As long as it has no SLS you should be fine.

Best wishes

Hi I just put 2 & 2 together, I love cinnamon gum so much. I noticed yesterday as I was chewing it that my mouth was getting extremly dried out, like cottonmouth. Today I had another piece, and now my tongue hurts so bad. I can't enjoy my acidy foods now. I have noticed this in the past but blew it off like I had burned my tongue or something. I now know what causes it, CINNAMON GUM. Hope this helps

A few days ago I felt as if I had an ulcer but the pain grew stronger and what I thought was an ulcer is now a white bump under my tongue. My gums are also in pain. It hurts when I eat or brush my teeth. I was wondering what a possible reason for this is or what it is called. I'm just hoping it is not Herpes.

Take valtrex. you may not have herpes..but trust me. It HELPS. also, have your doctor perscribe some of this...oral clear jelly stuff (forgot the name). It numbs your toungue long enough for you to enjoy a meal. It's also gods gift to those weird bumps!!!

if anyone is still curious those little painful white bumps on your tongue are most likely called lye bumps or lie bumps (transient lingual papillitis) which is kind of an inflammation to your taste buds (fungiform papillae)this can be caused by either trauma to your mouth (ex.biting tongue/cheek, pressure from kissing or oral) or by acidy foods or by stress but there is no cure for them they just have to go away on there own now there is something called magic or miracle mouthwash that some people swears helps with the pain its a mixture of benedryl and maalox and sometimes has a topical pain reliever in it. you can ask your pharmicist about it or your dentist/doctor either one should be able to help you. there is also a thing called Victory V is a British brand of liquorice-flavoured lozenges that helps sooth the pain also but i believe that only available over the internet from the UK if its available here in the USA i am not sure >this information came from 2 differant dentist in the Ohio State University Oral and Maxillifacial surgery department

any1 if this cud b from drinkin vinigar cuz i was pissed and drank sum that had chillis in and now i have white lumps on my tounge at the back and they hurt

Change your toothpaste! I used to get horrible canker sores, and stopped using toothpaste that contains sodium lauryl sulfate - it completely stopped my canker sores!

Ya, I've seemed to link the white bumps on my tongue to too much of one of these: sugar, citric acid, or alcohol. And when I combine them all over a few days it makes it hard for the bumps to heal.
I GET THEM ALL TH TIME AND THEY HURT SOOOO BAD! IT USUALLY STARTS OFF WITH ONE LITTLE RED BUMP AND THEN IT TURNS WHITE AND THET START SPREADING! WOW, IT HURTS A LOT. BUT I DONT KNOW A CURE! PLEASE! GIVE ME A CURE! IT MAKES ME MAD! IN FACT I HAVE ONE RIGHT NOW!!!

Iam Glad I Read This, Because The Past Few Years Been Nothing But Darkness For Me, I Went To The Doctors Twice And They Said I Was Fine And Nothing Was Wrong With Me. But Still Had The Pain Come Back And I Always Thought I Had Herpes Or Cancer Or Something. But Now I Feel Better Knowing Iam Not The Only One Going Thew It. But At The Same Time This Made Me Strong And Be More Carefull. If Some One Knows A Cure Post It. But I Know What Yall Are Going Trough. God Bless

I too have suffered these bumps for most of my adult life. I have not been successful at identifying the cause because everytime I think I have it figured out and avoid a certain food, drink, or anything else I still end up getting them. I have often blamed sharp parts of my teeth starting the irritation and then just the compulsion of messing with the bumps to check on their condition causes them to become progressively more irritated. I actually think this is just an unfortunate side effect of the stupid little bumps along with my obsessive compulsive personality. This definately makes for an extended recovery, so the advice concerning mouth guards may be good for me. I have had moderate success by attempting to remove the bumps with fingernail clippers or simply scratching them off and letting them heal. This seems to shorten the duration of the bumps existence, although it is quite barbaric, I know! I don't really suggest trying this method without discussing it with a doctor, there may be unforseen consequences. But maybe by suggesting to one's physician their intention to try this method it would prompt the doctor to do his/her job and help to solve the problem appropriately. I have a belief that like many things in life once they are there is no real solution but time to make it better. Prevention may be the only effective treatment. So if there is something that you know causes the bumps avoid it. If you are like me and you have no idea why they appear, hang in there and maybe one day a cure will arrive. It is quite uncomfortable, but iapparently there is no threat to my life and i don't think they are contagious because I have never passed them to a partner and i have been getting at least one or two of these bumps on my tounge at an average frequency of about once every other month lasting a week or two for the last twenty years. I have tried many things and have talked to many doctors and have just come to accept this as an irritating part of my strange existence.

Cheers to all and I suggest don't take life too seriously it should be about the good times, not the little irritations and inconveniences along the way.

consider yourself lucky! i have had my tongue half covered in these bumpes that look like irritated tastes buds. it is called transient lingual papilitis and the medical community does not know exactly what causes this. i have had a flare up last over a month, get infected because i bite them and pull them off, bleed and they only get bigger and more painful. i almost exactly every two weeks and they last about a week, so on average i live half my life with a bleeding, irritated and painful tongue. gross i know. i have tried EVERYTHING! I even work in the medical field, i am a nurse and no one knows anything about this condition. i think it might be viral, like they discovered chronic acne to be viral. it is in your system, could be hereditary, lack of certain nutrients, hormones...who knows. coping tips are helpful that i gather from the net. i feel literally CURSED with thic condition, but you know, its harmless and could be so much worse. i should be thankful.:o:o:o

RE: Above post. I recently got these irritating little gits on my tongue. I have had them about a week and they are driving me insane. I was worried it was an STD and have felt too embarrassed to see my gp about them. However, having read the posts, I think prior to the outbreak I fragilised my tongue by eating burning hot corn on the cobs. The next few day I ate tons of chilli olives, chilli con carnes, thai green curries, spicy salsa. All very spicy, some very acidic and very salty. I also ate a rather delicious half tub of double choc icecream. I also feel very tired at the moment and have a slight sore throat.

I am a keen sports person, and this week have swam over 100 lengths on 3 different occasions, without hydrating whilst exercising. Then I have had loads of coffee. When I run my clean fingers over the raised spots - I have noticed the taste on my fingers is extremely salty.

I have attacked the spot on the tip of my tongue with tweezers - hoping for a release from the pain. DONT do it! I have taken paracetamol - that takes the edge off it, i have taken zirtec - in case it was an allergy - that also helped, i have doused my tongue in yoghurt - that definately soothes. My best advice would be to avoid spicy foods, acidic foods, and drink lots of water. I find brushing my teeth, mouth wash, bonjela really help. The last day I have made a conscious decision to ignore them and hey presto they appear to be getting better. I am sorry there are so many sufferers but I am really happy too as there has been some excellent advice in these posts. As I live in the UK I am going to buy some victory V sweets tomorrow which are meant to help.

The largest relief I got from these little blighters so far was to eat licorice.

So not to freak out, but believe me I am.

A few weeks ago the doctors diagnosed me with oral thrush gave me the mouth wash and pill for it and I assumed it was gone. But i've noticed a kind of splotchy white coating on the very back of my tongue as well as a ton of bumps. On the tip of my tongue is a single white bump and a sore.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice? Everything I've read online says this is HIV but my tests have come back negative thus far.

I am in the same boat as you! I get the same thing and have been getting them more frequently the last few months. It started a few years ago and seemed to be limited to the week after I had a lot of alcohol one evening - usually only when I did tequilla shots. However, now I seem to get them even if I have a few beers and the latest episode was this week and I haven't drank any alcohol in a month - so I'm not sure what caused it this time. For me, I am definitely getting geographic tongue and it seems like the "transient lingual papilitis" or "lie bumps" come the day after I notice the geographic tongue. The geographic tongue is more towards the back of my tongue (looks just like other photos of GT I've found) and the lie bumps towards the tip. For me I've tried everything and nothing seems to work (different toothpaste, hydrogen peroxide, different mouth washes, taking multiple vitamins including B-12). The back of my tongue doesn't bother me but the bumps towards the tip of my tongue drive me crazy and I can't help but to scrape my teeth against them. This has finally gotten to the point where I am so frustrated with it I don't know what to do. I have appts with both an allergist and an ear, nose & throat specialist but after reading these posts I'm not very confident they will have any answers. If anyone finds any answers please email me at jkramber at comcast dot net and post them here. Thanks!

I believe the alcohol may be causing your issues - do you still use a mouthrinse? Does it contain alcohol?

A food diary is a pain to do, but would be helpful in determining exactly what foods or drinks are causing this problem. I believe you may have an issue with alcohol, but it could be something else.

A NAET practitioner can help pinpoint exactly what is causing your tongue problems.

I actually stopped using mouth rinse because it didn't seem to do anything. I was using a non-alcohol rinse that was primarily hydrogen peroxide with a couple other inert ingredients. I suspect that this latest outbreak was caused by either orange juice or lemonade - both of which have not been stricked from my diet but they never seemed to cause this in the past.

I am scheduled to see a physician who specializes in allergies and immunology and is board certified by the American board of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Is this different than a NAET practitioner? It certainly seems so from looking at the NAET website. I'll be honest, I'm a bit of a skeptic when it comes to all this "natural healing" stuff. At the same time, I would love nothing more than to find out I am just ignorant and there is a solution to my problem through those sources. From what I've read about geographic tongue and transient lingual papilitis, it doesn't sound like the mainstream medical community has discovered what really causes them or how to cure them - at least from everything I've been able to find on the web. Thanks for your comments. :):)

over the years i've noticed that when my stomach was messed up i'd get the bumps so i started eating yogurt and in a coupe of days they would be gone so i believe that the enzyme's in the yogurt help the bodies digestive system in some way. i know it sounds crazy but it seems to work for me
