I have TMJ and my doctor says its because if muscle spasims.

However is it possible for my gigivitus gum disease to cause this and if so what other treatments are out there for it?

I am not an expert by any means - but there is no connection. TMJ is your is in your jaw.

The reasons I am aware of for TMJ (and there may be others) is stress can cause tight clenching the jaw and nightime teeth grinding (stress related or not). I think it can also occur if your jaw is not straight too.

My dentist and DR both said:

Hot as you can take it compresses for I don't remember how long say 15 minuntes several times a day.

Work on your stress.

Then take Aleave or a generic version of it's active ingredient (naproxin I think). NOT Iburophin or asprin. Although ibuprohin does relax muscles, but Aleave helps me more than Ibuprophin.

Work on your stress.

I don't know if there is a cure, other than if it's related to nightime clenching/grinding a mouth guard might help.

Work on your stress.

Also when you are symptomatic start with the above before the pain gets to far along.

Did you read between the lines?

Good luck. I know it hurts!

I have found that massaging aspercreme into my jaw muscle helps alot. More than any pills. There is a surgery that you can get if your TMJ is very bad. They break and reset your jaw, and it helps relieve the muscle pain. Also, they have night guards that you can get from your dentist. If you have a mouth that will fit the football mouth guards, you can use that at night, my jaw was too small for that. But they are really cheap, 97 cents at Target.

To get a custom one from your dentist costs around 100$. But it helps with the night time clenching.

Good luck, I sympathize, I get TMJ headaches at least twice a month that last several days.

My jaw is really small so i guess i need a custom one. Did you ever get mucsle spasims where you feel like your teeth will pop out but it doesn`t.
