Sorry, can't help you, only empathise with you. I have exactly the same thing. Only noticed it about a month ago but haven't had it checked out. Would be interesting to know if other women do have it.

I have had a white spot [ looks like it is 3mm filled with poison but it is hard to touch ] on the left of tongue since 2003. I had a breakdown due to severe domestic violence at the time and was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.
There are also raised lumps at the back of my tongue same texture.
My tongue is constantly furry. I also have ecessively mucus at the back of my throat which has a stringy texture. I suffer neuralgia / TMJ / Face Pain and have a clicking in throat when I swallow. Doctor just puts everything down to Fibromyalgia as it covers such a large list of symtoms...
I asked dentist about it and he said I should gargle with salt water.
I also suffer endlessly with Bacterial Vaginosis... and periods changed in 2003.
Just by looking back at what my symtoms are plus loads of others - it makes me wonder whether I should take an HIV test.
Im scared.

I would take the spots and any lumps on your tongue seriously until they are ruled out by a professional. I have some knowledge of deseases of the mouthand white spots on the tongue are NOT common to all women. If you have insurance (dental or medical) ask your doctor or dentist for a referral to an oral surgeon who is a specialists in this area. If your doctor or dentist does not give you a referral I would push for it or see an oral surgeon on my own if possible. The visit can be quite expensive. The next step would be Dental Universities which can provide very good care at very low fees. Treatment is supervised by a head dentist. Oral surgeons are also there for treatment. This info is for all posters with these kind of symptoms. Many spots and lumps are benign however the mouth's symptoms can be a symptom of a very serious illness. I would be very interested how you do.

White spots can be a clear indication of oral cancer and should be evaluated by a trained doctor or oral specialist immediately. The general rule is that if the symptoms don't go away after 2 weeks, you go to a dentist/doctor and have them find out what is in your mouth. Time and time again we see cases of people who let these things go and, months or years later, are told they have advanced oral cancer. Does this mean you all do? No, but you don't want to be one of those statistics.
Just because you tested negative for HIV once means absolutely nothing, as it can take 6+ months after the infection for antibodies to show up. Have then run another test.
You are correct in assuming that your GP is mistaken- this sounds like the typical ignorance these kinds of doctors give out when they are too stubborn to admit uncertainty and defer to a specialist. If you need a referal then DEMAND your doctor sends you to a dentist or oral specialist, if not then make an appointment with one immediately.
Note that if you have thrush (which is a fungal infection) that does not necessairly imply you have HIV, as there can be other reasons for it. But at the same time, having an HIV test is smart thinking.
Good luck to all of you.

Has your doctor talked to you about Geographic Tongue? I have it and thought that I had thrush. It's a recurring condition that is idiosyncratic (no known cause). It's also linked to Psoriasis (about 1 in 4 people with Geographic Tongue also have Psoriasis). You mentioned white spots on your outer body, which could be plaque psoriasis.
Just one other thing to look into.

I would recommend any person that has spots or any problems with their tongue to see a accupunturist. my accupuncturist diagnoises the body by their tongue and also taking the pulse for all the internal organs. something going on with the tongue indicates that there is something going on in the body that needs to be addressed. This is the first time I have ever sought out alternative medicine and I can tell you that it has been an incredible and healing experience. I am so happy that I didn't just take drugs to hide my symptoms but have found a path that acutally heals the body.

This sounds a lot like my friends symptoms, she has cancer in her sinuses it effects her mucus membranes ... it is very very rare though but you should check it out

This sounds like Oral Lichen Planus. This should be biopsied in order that a diagnosis be made. Here in England the dentist is often the referree to the Oral Clinic of hospital. Probably different in USA.

I read this last week because I was having the white tongue and all.
Well, I fealt that maybe it was an allergy. Thought about what I had changed in my diet the last few months, for this has been going on for several weeks now.
Well, I desided that one thing that I did change was my tooth paste. I started using that Pro-health tooth paste by Crest.
I am very happy to say that it was the tooth paste. I went back to the old paste tooth paste with just mint in it and my tongue has cleared up.
Hope this helps someone.

I totally agree with you. I have 3 children that have a geographic tongue. I know that these posts are old but just wanted to add ;thats exactly what it sounds like. Another thing that goes along with geographic tongue is bad breath. The white spots will come and go and move to different areas of the tongue. I have noticed that my kids have trouble with certain food and drinks bothering them when the spots are present such as ketchup, oranges, tomatoes, etc. basically acidy foods make their tongues burn.

I just read a post in here how white spots can be a sign of vitamin B deficiency. http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=9948
I read sores in the mouth are a common symptom of vitamin b 12 ..this lady is an expert on it she says to get two tests I think one is a urine and the other blood.. don't settle for just one as it can give you a false positive or negative.... treatment is easy too! Take care and hope this helps... my son has them and I am going to have him checked for this also.

slut is right, symptoms like this can be medication related. Methadone caused it for me.
My doctors first thought was that I was HIV positive too, which I'm not. He said it was like thrush and prescribed Nystatin mouth rinse (nasty) 5 times daily. I'm not sure if that cured it or it was me stopping Methadone, but it went away shortly thereafter.
