View Full Version : Neck pain associated with nodules?

I am awaiting a biopsy this week for 2 solid nodules (one in each lobe) that were discovered last fall. They were not found in a physical exam in July even though the thyroid was palpated, found incidentally in an MRI of the back in August (not sure what size) and an ultrasound in late November showed one at 3.5 cm and the other at 2.5. My level of discomfort has increased significantly since then, so I imagine they have grown, although I cannot confirm this yet.
I have been experiencing sharp neck pains when I move my head, and generally feel my neck swollen and stiff. I also have pain that radiates from the sides all the way to the back, mostly back of the head just behind the ears. Could this be related to the nodules?
I am not too concerned about malignancy, as I understand the cure rate to be quite good, but my surgeon stated in January he would not remove nodules of this size if they were benign, as he felt they didn't cause a problem.
My day to day life is certainly altered by this pain, and I don't know what else it would be. Stretching and general home care has not made any difference since December. If this is not the nodules I am at a loss for what is causing this pain.
Any advise / experience from the group?

I have the same problem with neck pain/tightness which is not helped by stretching, heat, or anti-inflammatories. I also have a nodule that an FNA was just done on. Also, two other smaller ones not FNA'd. I feel like crap. When I went to my GP in February she didn't even check my thyroid and diagnosed me with "irregular periods." I had a hunch that something else was wrong, made an appt with an endocrinologist who found the nodules. Also, I have very low potassium. Not sure why. Anyway, I just wanted to post and tell you I too have the pain with nodules even though the M.D. says it is not really possible anatomically (?). Also, my jaw and ears feel pain too.

I know this post is a few months old but I just came across it and was wanting to know if it is possible for the nodules to cause pain. My neck first started bothering me in January. I started having the 'full' feeling and the Dr. said my thyroid felt enlarged. After and U/S & CT scan, 1 nodule was found on the right lobe. The left side of my neck was the side bothering me though. I had to wait 2 months to be seen by the endo. and once I did see him he said it was nothing to worry about (he looked at my scan that I brought with me) and prescribed 3 months of Synthroid 100 mcg. Never checked my thyroid levels (the previous dr. did 2 months prior) Since then my neck/thyroid, mostly the right side, will get sharp pains off & on. But now, the past few days the pain seems to be more often. I've never had this pain in this area before all these thyroid problems started. I'm starting to get worried about this nodule, even though he said not to worry about it. I keep finding things online that pain can be a sign of thyroid cancer. But I've also read that a benign nodule can also cause some pain.
Does anyone else have any input on this? My next appt. is at the end of this month. I wish he would just do a biopsy on it to make sure what it is. If it is cancer I want to catch it asap obviously.
